There are a lot of people in Virginia who question how big of a factor academics actually are in this decision. Speculation based mostly on the fact that he started off wanting to do engineering, but eliminated VT, and didn't even give UVa a look. If academics were the main consideration, one would think he'd at least listen to what UVa had to say.
Eta- I personally have no idea and haven't paid much attention. Just heard that in the last few days
