Of course it's coming. Also going out the window are limits on years of eligibility.

It doesn't happen as much now as 50 years ago but there was a time a guy could hang around Double A baseball for years. College football is becoming the minor leagues for the NFL so if a CFB team wants a guy who is good enough to be in the top third of CFB and can help a team, but not good enough for one of the truly professional FB leagues, so what if he's been around 6 or 7 years. Sign him up and let him play.

I don't agree with it but I'm just a fan of 60 plus years who is quickly losing interest.

We certainly know that minor league baseball and the G-League have captured the country's imagination. What's one more?

Fans have the power.

But the problem is... they are t-shirt fans. They didn't go to school either. So what's it to them.

The problem with the universities just divesting themselves from the minor league is that they wouldn't be able to come close to filling these 100,000 seat stadiums with fans to watch a bunch of engineering majors play football.

That, and what’s to prevent the engineering majors from also making monetary demands for playing?

Create an entire minor league FB system that does not involve the universities?

I think we've gone about this the wrong way.

Instead of changing the whole system, we should've put pressure on the NFL to start a farm league (since they're already getting one for free) so that kids have a choice to immediately get paid or get a scholarship in college as an amateur athlete.

There are thousands of talented kids that would be left to fill out these collegiate rosters, and the entire sport wouldn't be destroyed.

The bigger problem is ESPN wouldn't televise it.

I said this same thing a few months ago. The handwriting is on the wall.
Might as well be the Baton Rouge Tigers, Austin Longhorns, Tuscaloosa Tide, etc.

I wouldn't sink capital into anything that I'm getting for free.

True, but they like to wrap it up in nostalgic Americana in order to sell it. What is more Apple Pie than good ole school sports teams?

Even though it's all a lie.

There will be no more 4 year limits of eligibility. You'll have 32 yr old "college" football players.

I believe you're correct. How many are really getting an education now? They’re largely professional athletes, not student athletes. Defeats the original purpose of extra-curricular.

It's going to be interesting to see what it takes to make hunting and fishing more rewarding than watching college football. But ESPN and these greedy universities will damn sure find out.

Running it into the ground is the American way.

Because the university wouldn't be profiting from their work.

Or rather, nope.

I've always had the opinion that practice and film should count toward hours. If you are going to have gender studies as a major, sports should be considered majors.

I think within 10 years half the schools playing college football will drop out.

Of course, but it's like we're asking "what sacrifices should we make to afford this," instead of "why is it so expensive in the first place?"

It's a relationship that the NFL has been taking advantage of for decades.

There are rule changes and contractual agreements that could be made to greatly affect their business model if they didn't want to participate, plus public/fan perception.

All this to say, it's probably too late. They've been just sitting back watching while universities fund development and hand them billion-dollar assets, year after year.

And now those universities (and ultimately fans) are stuck paying the market prices that they set.

I've never heard that idea before, but the concept makes sense!

Unfortunately I think you're right.

When the super-conferences form and thousands of students (across all campus sports) become employees, the UABs of the world will wish they never fought so hard to try and make it work, because it just won't be financially viable.

I think the big powers will hold on another decade or so, but I feel like we are on the slow march to the death of intercollegiate athletics.
