That game should have never come down to focusing on ref calls. Georgia should have run them out of the building. It's a tale as old as time though. When you have your foot on the other team's throat, don't let up. Finish the job.

Bama refs. Been cheating since the 60’s.
Why does your school let it continue?

The only reason the foot was ever on our throat is because the refs missed multiple calls that favored UGA. No fewer than four 15 yard penalties and a play that went the length of the field that should have been called back.
Amazing to me that UGA fans still have the gall to complain about refs in that game, when they benefited from poor officiating all night long.

Go watch the clip. 1:04. Don’t be lazy. JJ’s hand was actually in between PP’s when he began bringing his hands together for the catch.
Wrong. try the slow down option on Youtube. He touched Peterson's arm, not the ball and even then it was still AFTER PP had the catch and a foot down. your angle is obscured you can see visible inches in the photo I posted, and using a different video. One with much better quality.
LINK
at .47 seconds the ball is almost to his hand. JJ has made contact with PP.
Fast forward to the angle I used that starts with McElroy throwing.
At 1:04 the ball is inches from the two players. At 1:06.30, with is 1:05 in your video, the ball is in Peterson's hands. It is not tipped nor is JJ's hand touching anything but PP's body. They are angled away from JJ's out stretched reach.
Furthermore, JJ touching it wasn't what was called, they called PP out of bounds when he had possession so when Bama fans came up with that insanity IDK.
Slowing the video down to .25 playback speed shows an accurate visual of the bang/bang play
Verdict: INTERCEPTION.

You are literally making things up at this point.
After Julio and PP were touching it together.
Nobody is arguing that PP didn’t catch the ball. Are you confused?
They’re literally the same clip from the same angle from the same game. Mine is in HD.

quote:No it wouldn't have.
The still photo shows the foot clearly in bounds when he catches the ball. These days, with review, that would have been correctly called a touchdown
He clearly didn't have possession of the ball until after his right foot hit the boundary.
Look at Brown's reaction to the call. Or, more accurately, look at his total NON-reaction. He knew he was out of bounds and didn't even pretend he wasn't.
In fact until they published this bullshite still photo a few days after the game there wasn't even a controversy.
quote:Sure it doesn't.
Still, this is like 24 years later and Alabama is so much better than Auburn that it doesn't matter.

Except they weren't. JJ Is touching Peterson well before the ball gets there(non interference style), Peterson then stretches out and Julio moves to try to mimic. Peterson's body was in the process of stretching out as JJ's hand is inching closer. Peterson has possession and a foot down BEFORE JJ touches it. So even if JJ touches it after the fact, PP foot touches before JJ touches it. BOTTOM frickING LINE
If your's is in HD why did the still shot look like a potato was used?

Incorrect.

Because I zoomed in on the screen shot so even the blind could see Julio's fingers on the ball. That clearly wasn't good enough. I'm good, but I'm not Jesus. That was the best I could do.

I try not to be an overly biased fan so I can certainly see why UT fans and others would be angry over the Gaffney catch.
But over the years I've never even seen unbiased third parties agree on it.
IMO it's just an impossibly subjective play that will never be universally agreed upon. Especially given the unclear definition of control/possession back then.
It was a drop. He never had possession
Allama Matthews was the official. A Vandy grad with a hatred of Tennessee. He also made a phantom PI call that cost Tennessee a bowl game.
He should have been fire as an official for that blatant bad call. It wasn't even an accident. That SOB did it on purpose.

That ridiculous decision to give Auburn enough time to run a field goal play was awful. They didn't run the clock when they were supposed to. There should have been no way to run a play. Terrible officiating.

Your bias is saying the moment of “touching” is the exact point of controlling and that’s not how it works.
quote:
That’s not what I said. I said it can be. Obviously, many times it’s not. In this case, the ball never moves after the point of him having both hands on the ball with a foot in bounds. By the definition, that is possession. So in this instance, it is how it works.
