Off the top of my head, I'd rank them from best to worst:

Saban
Bowden
Myer
Carroll
Miles
Tressel
Stoops
Fulmer
Brown
Coker
Chizik

I've actually always considered Les to be very similar to Chizik.

Most won't get past this statement, and that's what I'm hoping for.

Miles above Tressel and Stoops? Yikes. I'd accept the contention that he may be replaced with Fulmer, but not those two.

Larry Coker is doing a pretty good job of building up a team from scratch at UTSA.

Mack has a buttload of 10 win seasons at Texas and was solid at UNC.

Les is the one who got things rolling at Okie Light.

I don't any of those three are anywhere close to as bad as Chiz.

I like your list but would reverse Brown and Fulmer... Texas is the better football program, but Tenn is no slouch... look at the overall records and wins. Fulmer can't touch Brown.

Brown also has multiple BCSCG appearances and several other BCS wins outside of the national championship.

I may have Miles a little high. But he is competing and winning in a tougher conference than Tressel and Stoops. I could go with either of those in any order. I think there is a definite top tier (Saban, Bowden, Myer, Carroll), then a middle tier (Miles, Tressel, Stoops, Fulmer, maybe Brown), then a lower tier (Coker, Chizik).

I don't see how you put Mack Brown, Les Miles, or Bob Stoops on this list.

Mack Brown won at North Carolina, where few others have. He was 69-46-1 there. Florida State was the only reason he never won an ACC title. Overall he's 236-117-1 as a head coach with 1 BCS title and 2 conference titles.

Les Miles is 113-42 as a head coach with 2 SEC titles and 1 BCS title. He started the ball rolling at Oklahoma State.

Bob Stoops turned around an Oklahoma program that was at its lowest point ever. He won a national title in year two and is 149-37 at OU with 8 Big XII titles.

I would put Bowden in the middle tier, but otherwise agree.

You're assuming that the list is examining hundreds of coaches. Someone(s) has to fill those slots.

I'd squeeze miles between tressel and stoops. I hate tressel, but he is a good coach that has been overshadowed with some cheating that when you get down to it, honestly didn't really effect his coaching ability at all. Yeah, he lost a few bcscg's, but you have to look at like the 90's buffalo bills, he had to be pretty good to get there in the first place.

If one is willing to separate themselves from emotion and be pragmatic, there is truth in the comparison. I could be biased and argue that Chizik wasn't terrible. However, looking at it objectively, he was.

This link shows all the head coaches of all the #1 AP teams

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AP_National_Championship_Trophy

I'm not sure about the super old coaches, but the list is really solid.

Chizik and Coaker really are a clear #1/#2 in terms of worst HC ever to win a title.
