1. Gene Chizik
Just a bad coach in general. Couldn't produce a decent defense.

2. Larry Coker
Average coach who inherited a stacked team.

3. Mack Brown
Coach with the easiest recruiting job in the nation who would have Texas in the top 5 regularly if he were decent.

4. Les Miles
Similar to Mack Brown in that he regularly under-utilizes his talent. Runs one of the most ugly and unsophisticated offenses ever witnessed. Can barely speak modern English. However the gods have blessed him with a unique characteristic: luck.

I looked at the BCS era only, however feel free to add coaches prior.

Nice cast! Number 1 makes you appear fair and impartial. You'll get some hits with 4

I can agree with your first 3, but the last one. Les Miles has routinely fielded a top flight team each and every year, even while Alabama has been running on all cylinders. Les Miles genius is in the fact that everyone underestimates him.

Mack Brown seems ridiculous, but actually isn't. He's only won 3 conference championships in his entire career, and has more than a handful of 1-win and 0-win seasons.

Les Miles is ridiculous

That is why I put him below Mack Brown. While he underachieves, he at least remains in the top 15 most years. I believe that if LSU had a top coach they would be much, much more dominant. They really need a coach with a good background in offense. They always seem to have great receivers which they end up doing nothing with.

I'm sorry but you are wrong about CLM. His success and consistency doesn't deserve such ranking.

who won the title at Colorado?... McCarney? or something like that. Had some success there, but they were never big 8 powerhouses or anything, IIRC.

If anything, it's a compliment to LSU's talent. I believe that a coach like Chip Kelly would dominate there.

Even a complacent coach should be able to produce 10+ win seasons at Texas with consistency.

ah... so would phil fulmer count?... or does 99 officially begin the 'bcs era'? Mack Brown is a better football coach than Fulmer, imo.
