Kelly's a good coach, but I think he's past his prime. Realistically, he might be 5th or 6th best in the SEC right now.

It’s Jimbo, until Kelly manages to have a losing season with all top 10 recruiting classes (which I don’t see happening). Kelly has also at least made the sec championship, something jimbo never did at A&M. Jimbo does have a NY6 bowl win that BK does not, but with the advent of the expanded playoffs, that probably isn’t as big of a deal anymore.

I'd say Jimbo for sure. Kelly seems to be consistently winning 9-10 games a year. We aren't happy, but I'd still take Kelly over Jimbo.

Think about all the resources and favorable treatment Notre Dame received and Kelly still couldn't win anything there. In fact he was blown out in just about every major bowl game he was in. Wasn't competitive at all.

There's a difference in the talent brought into Notre Dame, and what's in the top tier of the SEC. That comes from commitment by the administration, not what a coach can do. We've known awhile that Notre Dame has a glass ceiling, and if they played an SEC schedule they'd probably be fighting to get to 8 wins.

That's not an excuse for Kelly, but the statement that he can't win big games- nobody does much when it's a talent mismatch.

Napier

Of course, but Napier was always high risk. In theory if he sucked out loud he'd be out in three years.

The theory didn't hold, but that's the idea.

Brian Kelly was - despite his decades of showing exactly who he is - the guy who just needed the SEC to finally come out of his shell and not be the guy he was for decades.

It's harder to get rid of him, because if he goes 9-3, 10-2, consistently and you're paying him a boat load of money that is a harder sell than a G5 coach doing 4 losing seasons.

Aggy paying for Jimbo’s natty at Florida State is hilarious.

Kelly is 1-2 versus Texas A&M as LSU’s coach.
