Part of the problem with Stidham last year was he was able to recognize AU was in the wrong play, but he wasn't allowed to change it.

Does the auburn qb not look to the sideline presnap to change the play?

I thought they did which makes the "inability to get out of a bad play" talk just an excuse.

Stidham was pretty successful last year with a shaky OL.

Wwll, he threw for over 3,000 yards with a shaky OLine, so yeah. That's pretty darn good.

I would be shocked. Their defense is just too good. I see pretty sure wins at Tennessee, Ole Miss and Arkansas, so I have to assume you are trolling Auburn fans. They could easily go 11-1 or 10-2.....or I could also see them going 8-4 if their Oline doesn't pan out.

Maybe he's smarter than Malzahn and the fans know it.

- Gus is 0-6 on the road vs teams that finish in the Top 15 in his 5 years at Auburn

- Gus is 0-4 in road games against Alabama and Georgia.

- Both times Gus won the West were seasons in which Auburn had Alabama/Georgia at home to end the year.

So, Auburn will have to probably do some things they haven't done in Gus' entire tenure there to win the West this season.

Georgia hadn't played for a National Championship in more years than any Georgia fan wants to admit. Sometimes things happen. Malzahn should have the talent, in place, if they can get good Oline play and find a strong running back. There are some questions, for sure. Those questions are why I don't expect Auburn to win the west or the SEC. But, I also know they can do it with the talent they have and a break or two.

Simple minded football fans alway use stats like this to try and prove a point. Lets take a close look at those games on the road.

Was AU ever favored in those games ?
Who were the QBs for AU in those games ?
Who were the teams that they were playing and what was their record at the time ?

The only time that you would question the coaching in those games were LSU in 13, 17 and UGA in 14 and 16. You could even understand the loss to LSU in 13 due to a new starting QB (Marshall) and UGA in 16 due to injuries to the starting QB and RB. Again, Gus has never had a proven passing QB returning while at AU. He did at Tulsa and those Offenses lead the nation.

Yeah. Auburn wasn't supposed to beat either UGA or Bama last season (and that is besides the odds that they beat both).

It isn't outside the realm of possibility.

But Auburn was sub .500 away from JHS last season.
Sub .500 away from JHS in a 2016.
Malzahn is 12-15 away from home while at Auburn.

He needs to do things differently to get different results.

They finished in the Top 15, they were all pretty good at the time.

Your answers are geared towards someone using those stats as some sort of indictment of Gus. I'm not doing that. Nobody can be "expected" to win a bunch of games in which they are underdogs on the road to Top 10 teams. That's a very tough ask. But, it's the reality of the situation for Auburn this year.

To win the SEC West they will have to at least split those games (while winning all their other games, something Gus has had issues with as well). The SEC West Champion has gone 7-1 or 8-0 every year for the last 10 seasons. That means Gus basically HAS to win in Tuscaloosa and either win in Athens or lose in Athens and not drop any other SEC games. That's a helluva tough ask for anyone, and Gus hasn't proven to be able to do it yet.

He could this year, but history isn't on his side.

Again, explain how they suck.
Lost to #3 Clemson (ACC Champ) by 8 points.
Beat Missouri by 37 points.
Lost to LSU by 4 points
Beat Ark by 32 points
Beat A&M by 15 points
Lost to UGA (#6)) in a rematch by 21 points.
Lost to UCF (#10) by 7 points

He didn't say they suck. However, to win the SEC West they are going to have to win those road games against Top 10 teams. They can lose both of them and still have a really solid season (and not "suck" at all), but they won't win the West. And they could still go 11-2 and finish in the Top 5-10 and have a really good season.

I didn't realize it was that bad. Yes. It will be an uphill battle.
