This quote tells me that you haven't been to Detroit in at least 10yrs.
It's nothing like it used to be at least in downtown Detroit.
I would imagine you have never been there and only passed through on the interstate in Memphis.

I'm not going to defend Memphis as a city but Tennessee fans sure do love to shite on Memphis.

Granted, it is not the best city in the world but it is a neat city IMHO. Has some really neat areas and things to do but as with every city, there are definitely bad things.

Pretty much this. Have family that lives right outside of Memphis and this is how I feel about it in general.

Let's also consider Penny took what was a decent Memphis team from last year and did basically nothing better with this past season.
2017-18 Memphis = 21-13, 10-8 AAC, didn't make tourney
2018-19 Memphis = 22-14, 11-7 AAC, also didn't make tourney
They returned 4 starters, and had 5 senior starters on the team this year.
Losses this year vs a much tougher schedule - 8 were top 30 Net ranking
LSU 14 Net
Texas Tech 10 Net
UT 5 Net
Houston 4 Net
Cinc 25 Net
UCF 30 Net
Cinc 25 Net
Houston 4 Net

Putting on my naive no one cheats glasses
If all these kids care about is being prepared for the NBA than only one staff has more credibility than K and Cal and that is the Memphis staff.
If you want to learn what it takes to be a NBA player just ask 3 of your coaches who were players. You want to know how to take care of your body ask those 3. You want to learn what coaches look for and want ask former nba head coach.

For my many sins I currently live outside of Memphis and there are some great places in the city. And some amazingly craptacular places.
Its a bit confusing in Memphis because a neighborhood with million dollar homes is next door to an urban war zone. But Memphis doesn't suck. It might blow at times, but it doesn't suck.
As far as big cities in the Southern footprint Memphis, in all honesty, probably falls somewhere in the middle. Not great, not crappy, but kind of there.

I really havent been to Detroit in years, i did throw a generalization about it out there. I have however been to memphis, even somewhat recently. Its the same as its always been.

Penny has had AAU teams, middle school and HS championship teams. He has Mike Miller on his staff who just finished his playing career winning a ring with Lebron.
And everyone still wears his shoes.
You're clearly out of touch.
I am out of touch on what teenage basketball players are into, if its penny hardaway then by all means i guess. Just seems odd, im 33 years old and penny was at his prime when i was in like junior high. Ironically enough, back when he was in that movie about him being a blue chip athlete being paid to goto some random small school they typically wouldnt goto.

Managing a roster full of 18 yr old studs can't be easy. But with the way he's pulling talent, he could just reload with another stud and roll the dice with 'em.
quote:It's a crap-shoot for sure, but he's currently loading the dice for Memphis in a big way. Time will tell whether he can get hot or not.
If they underachieve and he doesn't get multiple first round selections drafted then reloading wont be easy.
Avery Johnson tried to load his roster and he brought in some talent (nothing on the level of Hardaway) and it turned out after a few years that Avery just couldn't coach the college game.

I swear Tennessee has the lowest basketball IQ fanbase I have ever encountered.

I’m actually open to believing the guy might be relatively clean.
What’s more likely is he’s another Pastner, who also landed a #1 class in his first recruiting class and managed to underachieve for years. Dude was as mediocre a floor coach as you could find and didn’t discipline for shite. Good dude though.
Got ran out of town for his sheer mediocrity. I see Penny being another Pastner.

Well thought out response. Thanks for your effort there sir. I mean there are some pretty simple statistics you can find that will support my claim that its a dangerous crime ridden city. Maybe it has made some big strides in the last couple years but i dont see how as a whole it could have corrected all of its short comings as a desirable major city to move to. I honestly do hope it gets better.

Did yall get invited to the tournament this year? Am i wrong about something? What in the hell about me correctly saying he didnt get into the tournament is anymore true than rick barnes losing in the sweet 16. You know only 1 team wins the tournament every year right? That would be like talking shite to Texas Techs coach about just not being able to win the big game for the last 2 years. You just have to get there to have a chance.

No. Jackson, TN, Cookeville, TN or Clarksville, TN are "shite holes." Memphis at least has some interesting, redeeming qualities to it that make it attractive to potential recruits.

He won't really have to if he keeps recruiting like this. He isn't going to have to live to blue blood standards. His coaching might cost him eventually but it is going to be a long time before that happens if he recruits at this level.
