Gus Malzahn has often batted down talk of the NFL, but he's never explained why a job in the pros does not interest him.
Until now.
The third-year Auburn coach, whose name was connected to the Cleveland Browns job in late 2013, has a simple explanation as to why the idea of coaching in the NFL doesn't entice him like it may other college coaches.
"To me, that's business," Malzahn told AL.com. "There's a line separation. That's business. I like the daily contact with an individual, working with them to help them reach our goals and dreams within our team -- and individually. That feeling. That goes all the way back to high school and now I've just got them a couple years older, but it still feels the same. I love high school football, I love college football. They're really close."
Malzahn has often identified himself as a high school and college coach at heart, but Chip Kelly's success with the Philadelphia Eagles could open the door for more uptempo coaches in the league.
Malzahn grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan and considers Tom Landry one of his favorite coaches, but he's not interested in making a jump during his career.
"It's a business," he repeated. "I like the purity of the game."

In other words, in the NFL, everybody pays their players and he would lose the one true advantage he's had since high school

He knows smoke and mirrors won't work in the League. He's very self aware and is conscientious of his own lack of coaching ability.

His gimmicks wouldn't work in the NFL?

Considering his coaching ability relies on lucky bounces, no-calls, etc. I don't blame him for not wanting to frick with the professional leagues.

So it is written, so it shall be.
If anything we might have to chase off a few high schools. The lure is real for Gus..

Even high school coaches know how to teach their centers not to snap the ball into their own nutsack.

Sounds like the same reason Saban rather coach college.

smoke and mirrors
I want my team's coach to be focused on out-scheming the other team. If he's only focused on players and not plays, he's a GM, not a coach.

As long as his offensive coaching style keeps dominating SEC teams like Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU and so forth, who cares?

Oh and you forgot horse collaring.

I will never forget that. Ever.

1 game = dominating? Prior, you continually got your shite kicked in.

You are one of two asshats in this post to characterize Gus' self-awareness like this. But so what if CFB is the arena he chooses? You wouldn't dare make the same assessment of Saban, who also floundered in the NFL, and came back to CFB to kick arse.
