Why is the SECBB Tourney held in the Dome instead of Phillips Arena?

Phillips was, you know, actually made for basketball. The Dome has awful sightlines for basketball. Why couldn't the SEC make a conference tourney work at Phillips (granted, this is a moot point going forward with Nashville becoming the new home for the tourney)?

I like the dome better anyway, its gonna have that "Final Four" type setting

This. It's nice to prepare teams for the Final Four by holding it in a comparable setting. I never understood the ACC holding their tournament in Greensboro, NC.

That's what I can't understand. I would actually buy tickets to the weekend games if it were in Phillips. Playing in the Dome for the SEC tourney is really nothing more than playing in a giant, mostly empty space filled with a few thousand Kentucky fans. Nothing Final Four about it IMO.

And when they get bounced early because their team DGAF? You have maybe a couple of thousand assorted fans left to fill a 71,000+ seat stadium (at least in that case it'd look like a typical Hawks game at Phillips).

Having a half full dome when Kentucky plays, and then an empty dome after they lose early doesnt seem wonderful.

I think it's more about they don't sell tickets to individual games, they sell them per day. If you have an 18k arena on a day when UK plays, the arena will be full for 2 hours, and empty the other 8-10 because other fans can't buy tickets.
With the Dome, they can sell 60k tickets and know the fans will stagger throughout the day.

They only seat about 40k in the GA Dome and even then it is only on Sat and Sun when they open the upper levels. There can't be more than a few thousand extra seats in the Dome over Phillips for the midweek games.

They curtain off half the dome anyway and put up stand alone bleachers on the side.

Usually Kentucky fans account for more than 18k, but I doubt they bring more than that this year with how they are playing.

Exactly. Most teams don't get a chance to play in a dome all year and it is nice to get some experience before the NCAA tournament.

The SEC doesn't do something because it works. It does it because it's profitable and apparently moving the tournament to Nashville is perceived to be more profitable. I just wonder why - if moving to a 20,000 seat arena in Nashville is supposed to be as profitable, if not moreso than the Dome - the game wasn't held at the comparable hockey/basketball arena already in Atlanta.

In Atlanta, they need a lot more "cheap seats" to attract the SEC football fan who lives in Atlanta but doesn't care enough to pay a premium that would have to be charged at Phillips. Nashville is closer to Lexington. Greater demand from fans who are more passionate about college basketball coupled with less supply means drastically increased price. It probably doesn't hurt that Nashville cut the SEC a better deal than the GA Dome offered.
