Why is Dan Mullen not considered a hot coaching commodity.

The dude has consistently won more in Starkville than anybody else has. In all likelihood he's about to have them 8-4, or 9-3 again, and he's done it at a time when the SEC West has been dominant.
He does more with less talent relative to their competition than any other coach in the nation. He can't recruit to Starkville because it's virtually impossible to get top level talent not from Mississippi to go there, but still he manages to take the leftovers of other schools and piece together a competitive team. He's an incredible evaluator and developer of talent. Almost comically better at it than Hugh Freeze.
He was an offensive disciple of Urban Meyer, and he seems to balance good relationships with players without compromising his authority.
He's good with the media, and he seems like a good man.
I don't understand why nobody is throwing this guy's name around for the Georgia job, or the Penn State/Texas/Oklahoma jobs if they come open.
Imagine what he could do at a place where he could actually get top level talent.....in my opinion he's one of the best coaches in the SEC.

We don't have a board for this

He's going to VT after this season

He really should be, tbh.

In seven years he is below .500 in the SEC. He is below .400 against the SECW. How does that translate into a roaring success? He has just taken a cellar dweller up to mediocrity status.

You're not wrong about any of that. I thought he would be mentioned a lot with all the openings.

A lot of good points. Solid thread OP. Have an upvote.

I think that Mullen is a proven good coach. What he has done at State is impressive.

Omg can we please trade coaches? I want State to be shut out, in back to back seasons.. Oh yeah, and I want to lose to an ooc school 90 miles up the highway

Take out his first two years, where his own recruits weren't developed yet, he's over .500, which is impressive because of where he's done it.
Mississippi State is the poorest University of all power 5 Universities by endowment
Mississippi State has the lowest average alumni earnings of anyone in the SEC
Starkville is consistently voted the least attractive college town in the SEC
Mississippi State is ranked last in the SEC by Academic quality, and 2nd from last among all P5 teams.
The point:
He's taken a program with extremely limited resources, who's fans have historically considered just getting bowl eligible to be a good season, and he has made above average a new norm, which to me is more impressive than winning 10 games a year consistently at a school like Texas, Florida, or Ohio State
Again, has he built the same quality rocket-ship that Nick Saban has built at Alabama? No, but what he has managed to build is just as impressive in some ways when you consider he was only given duct tape, plywood, kerosine, and Elmer's Glue. Whereas others have way better resources.

I don't think he is talked about because he hasn't left MSU yet. I think there is a reason he hasn't got a big job yet and would be surprised if he got One.

Good lord. Who's side are you on?

If Georgia opens up, I think you may hear his name mentioned for that job.

He pulled a Beuce Pearl and turned in another school for alleged recruiting violations that turned out not to be true.
Jeremy Foley has avoided him like the plague. despite success at State and ties to UF, he's twice been passed over. That speaks volumes about what he's like to work with.
