Why does Arkansas have such an incredible history of successful coaches?

Football is no bigger there than any other state in the Deep South. Why have so many great coaches come from there, while Mississippi and Louisiana have produced so many great players but not so many great coaches?
I am wondering if there is some geographical/social influence, or if this is just the result of a small sample size lacking statistical significance resulting in an unrepresentative distribution.

More like Texas HS ball than MS. They adopted a pass game earlier, and have very competitive large schools to do so. Up until about 10-20 years ago pretty much every team in MS was running the ball 80% of the downs. Which obviously isn't condussive to solid coaching development.
IMO the same reason you don't see a lot of good QB's out of MS, you have to go back to guys like McNair and Favre and even they weren't recruited highly because they didn't begin to develop until college. I would say AL had the same trend to an extent, but you have larger cities so there are more big time schools that were outliers.
Obviously that is changing. I would still recruit QB's OOS, but I think that probably begins to change in the next few years. But yeah, look at the players who've made it from MS in the last 25 years. You will see a trend, almost all of them are stout defenders. LB's and DT's mostly, sprinkled in with some DB's. Very few WR's/QB's. WR is a little easier because they play both ways in most cases, so the development isn't such a big deal.

I'm talking about the state of Arkansas, not the University of Arkansas.

People in Arkansas are bred to work hard, play outside, and socialize with a diverse group of people. We also tend to be pretty smart for redneck folk.

the better question is how the hell has West Virginia produced:
Nick Saban
Jimbo Fisher
Jim Grobe
Rich Rodriguez
Doc Holliday

You can either coach football or sell rocks on the side of the road, not much else to do.

They,re the unathletic kid who wanted so badly to make it on the field but genetics just wouldn't allow it. Being so passionate and wanting something so badly the next best thing was to put down the helmet and begin a career of coaching others that have the athletic talent that you never had. I kid, I Kid.... I have always wondered the same thing about Ark.
