Why do people let it affect them so or look down on others just because that person cheers for another team? I respect what these student athletes do, but sometimes the fans just ruin it.

Well, the first part is simply because we choose what we become emotionally invested in. No matter how OT rich you are, most of us live pretty common lives. Sports are a fun outlet and something we can have in common with others...the whole social connection thing...blah, blah.

But for the second part, its all about the interwebs, social media and sports radio (think Pawl). As a fan long before internet forums and such, you didn't have this kind of hate and vitriol. The idiots were always out there, but had no outlet to drive their lunacy.

Merry Christmas to one and all and I hope you each have a safe and successful new year.

A lot of people have severe insecurities & use sports as their crutch in life.

fanatic [fa·nat·ic]
n
1. a person whose enthusiasm or zeal for something is extreme or beyond normal limits.

Why do people take anything (not just sports) beyond normal limits? It depends but if we're talking CFB look at the state of Alabama—there's no NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, or MLS so people generally take it way more seriously. It's pretty much the only game in town and then some people just don't have anything else going on in their life like family, other pursuits/interests, creative outlets, etc...

I don't take sports very seriously. I watch every UT game I can (starting to think I'm a masochist), but whether they win/lose has no bearing on my day or life. That won't change when UT starts winning again, either. The only times I've been a little mad were when they played like shite and should've won the game...it frustrates me because I can see that if they only would've executed a little better they would've won. I've been there with coaches telling me the same thing and didn't realize it at the time but see it when I watch now.

Luckily I was able to play sports into the college level (basketball), so it's not a competetive thing for me other than "bragging" rights with friends. I don't feel like a better person when "my team" is doing well. I think for some It's all they have or helps self esteem or something like that. Sports give people an escape from their shitty lives.

LSU football is as much a social event as much as it is a game to watch.

It's an excuse for our Cajun queens to get dolled up and our guys to dutifully compete for their sweet wares, and sometimes marriages of varying lengths.

I imagine it's the same everywhere...no?

Because the Texas A&M culture is on a whole different/superior level than any other university on the planet.

Probably the universe.

Because our sports teams are an extension of our identity, life experiences and way of life.

People are proud to be associated with a certain team.
They had childhood experiences (tailgating, parents, friday nights/saturdays/schools traditions) that have emotionally tied them to their team.

It's no different than being nationalistic on a smaller scale.

When people attack your identity/way of life/traditions, you defend it with pride.

That's some weak psycho babble right there.

Association with winners is the backbone of Darwin's theory of evolution.

Wanna survive? Better find the strong and follow.

Maybe in your simple mind.

Everybody associates themselves with sports, whether that sports team wins or loses is irrevelant. To just associate with it is enough.

Win or Lose, it's better to be associated, or follow, a sport than not follow at all.

Why the crappy comment? It's just his opinion.

"Everyone" associates himself with sports? What does that even mean? I'm as big of a fan of my team as is anyone; but I certainly don't correlate said athletic team's outcomes with my overall personality & life outlook.

Different strokes, I guess.
