A Hot Toddy is a drink. Hoity Toity is someone who thinks they are fancier than everyone else. Combine the two, and you get Hotty Toddy.

Actually as an official Ole Miss reference, the first documented evidence of the phrase (then written as "Heighty! Tighty!") appeared in a November 19, 1926 copy of the student newspaper, The Mississippian.

In the newspaper that day, the following words appeared:

Heighty! Tighty!

Gosh A Mighty!

Who in the h--l are we?

Rim! Ram! Flim! Flam!

The answer is that no one knows exactly where the chant came from. It was popularized in the 1920s by the student body, and evolved over time into what it is today. There are a lot of theories (like the one posted above), but there is no official origin for “Hotty Toddy.”

it doesn't really mean anything

roll tide doesn't mean anything, nor does boomer sooner, gig 'em, war eagle, rock chalk or any other weird catch phrases college fanbases have adopted over the course of history. They may have origins in history, but they don't actually have a meaning outside of the fanbases that say them

You're in luck as we have a living legend here. Our very own DownSouthJukin first started the chant at the Ole Miss/Auburn game in 2000.

They play dress up and eat cold chicken fingers under a popup tent with a plastic chandelier in it and pretend that makes them classy. Nothing they do makes much sense.

It’s kinda one of those old chants like LSU’s Hot Boudin and cold cous cous come on Tigers Poosh Poosh Poosh chants. Some of it doesn’t make any sense like those old chants.

I’ve heard it as part of a WWII chant also. Heard them singing something close to it when they were in training camp on Band of Brothers episode one.

Yep, there's a lot of college football chants, catch-phrases, etc that are basically just a bunch of nonsense outside of their context within the athletic program of the college. I was going to bring up the LSU chant but it's not nearly as pervasive as the others
