Defintiely a cultural thing.
Are people still listed by their nicknames in the Reserve, La telephone book? Lots of Cue-balls, P-nuts, Chu Lu's, etc in that town used to not even have their first names listed.

Nicknames in college football have been around way since any of us were born.....
Every member of the 1908 LSU has a nickname, and near every team they played that season had nicknames for their players.
