That was McElwain. Muschamp tied for first once but Georgia held the tiebreaker.

Muschamp is just an all around failure and it’s an embarrassment we ever hired him. I’d rather have hired a nobody like clemson did and pray he works out

Talk about misremembering Clemson’s history at that time.

I love the clemson fans that pretend Dabo was a huge name when they pulled the interim title off

They wanted to fire him a few years later

But it was a good hire at the time, right? Saban coaching tree, had HC experience, good recruiter, firey personality, after Spur left yall in the ditch?

Not trolling, serious question.

It was a safe hire by a scared AD in over his head

And I mean at that time they did pull the national championship out of their arse in 2015 on a last second play but at the same time

1) They benefited massively from the new format. Not sure they would’ve even made the national title game in the BCS system with that loss of theirs which in turn allows Clemson to further propel itself.
2) even that that was Clemson’s 1st title since 1981. They weren’t some “football powerhouse” and I think Dabo was 3-5 vs SC after that season.
3) if there’s a silver lining to their success it’s I know we can do it. If the smaller school with the smaller alumni base and a football program that still has less value than our football program after 3 national titles (according to Forbes) can have all this success than I know we can.

Does rationalizing why Clemson became a power make it less painful?

Who would CNB have hired that year, instead of Muschamp?

A little bit yeah. If your two biggest rivals didn’t collapse at nearly the same time I’d predict Clemson would at least have 1-2 more losses per season - bouncing Clemson out the playoffs and adversely affecting their recruiting.

Someone other than a UF reject who couldn't win at one of the best jobs in college football.

I just assumed it was because Spurrier gave them some great years. Hiring the former Florida coach worked once...

Kirby was the first choice, Georgia made the now or never call with Richt.

We them pursued Dantonio, knowing he'd say no, but we had to ask.

Herman was next, he said no, he wanted Texas or nothing.

We looked at Fuente but apparently he had something that made us say no.

Stoops told Tanner to let Riley interview, but Tanner said he wanted someone with prior HC experience and that's when Muschamp and Rich Rod came about. Believe there was another name in there, maybe rooster knows who.

TL;DR: we have a shitty ad

Was some of that because of the lack of talent Spurrier left behind?

I don't think Spurrier liked Pastides because he didn't understand the value of athletics to the university and him hiring Tanner was confirmation of that. Spurrier gave up on recruiting after that and you know what happened next.

Pastides spent too much time chasing northeast students and money and ignoring what core alumni wanted. But that's another story.

Got to find a young guy LIKE, but not, Joe Brady and give him all the money he needs to hire the next great defensive mind and open the checkbook and pay them. Build a world class facility for the players and then you might win. It’s the only way.
