seems as though LSU would be in the North since it was founded by the war criminal yank that burned Atlanta and marched to the sea -

Would sign up for this division in a heartbeat:

LSU
Ole Miss

Sherman didn’t found LSU. It was established by the legislature. He was the first Superintendent of the school, however.

I guess they had to do it the way they did to preserve rivalries
When the SEC first went to divisions, there were 2 perm crossover games. Georgia had Auburn and Ole Miss. Auburn also had Florida. Alabama had Tennessee and Vandy.

The two perms kept all rivalries in place. Auburn could have been placed in the East, with Vandy in the West, and it wouldn't have changed a lot for the rivalries that actually matter.

Because geographically the SEC region is much larger in the East/West direction.

Same reason California is not nominally divided in to Eastern and Western Cali.

Time zones (which also correlates to how traditional rivalries formed due to SEC ADs scheduling their games around convenient travel and scheduling).

Only SEC East team in the Central time zone (until 2012) was Vandy. All West teams were in central time zone.

Also, putting Aub. in the East creates the issue of Ala./Aub. OR Ala./Tn. as perm rivals

Not sure that mattered, when the original east west divisions were drawn up you had two permanent crossovers and one rotation.

When it came down to this decision who were the people that made it curious? What a huge decision.

Tenn. could keep Ala. & Vandy.
Aub. could keep Ala. & _____?
Ga. could keep Miss. & _____?
