He had no problem with giving a number of scholarships as long as there was no composite requiring schools to 'cut players'. SEC presidents split on his proposal and Tech left.
This is more like it. GT was BY FAR the richest school in the SEC back then, and they could afford to have huge numbers of athletes on scholarship. The SEC (made up of otherwise much poorer schools) had a limit though, and when Bryant refused to vote with GT to loosen the scholarship ceiling, GT left because they thought they'd be better off on their own.

But Georgia Tech didn't want to drop any players--the other SEC schools didn't have an issue. If you could give out 45 scholarships, Dodd wanted Tech to be able to have 180. He thought the other schools were doing glorified tryouts.
Georgia Tech and Dodd felt Bryant was going to work with them and believed him when he said he could persuade the school presidents to vote in Tech's way but Bryant didn't show up for the meeting as Tech claims he said he'd do.

Yep. Same as Saban (and others) are doing now, like I said.
And yes, Bear chickened out and lied to Dodd also. He promised he would vote against it. When he learned it would be deadlocked and if he did not vote against it, the deadlock would be broken in favor of tryouts and cuts, he did not even show to the meeting (the ONLY one who did not).

That's exactly what Tuberville did when he came to Auburn in 1999.
Posted on 11/22/10 at 4:16 pm to I-59 Tiger
Not saying Tubs did not. What I am saying is it is wrong today and it was wrong then.
Bryant and Bama were the reason GT left the SEC. And Bryant lied and was a chickenshit to not show.

I wish Sewanee could come back into the SEC for Vandy's sake.
If Vandy had a team to kick around they might improve.

Bobby Dodd said it was wrong and he refused to do it and believed it created an uneven playing field for the Bear and Bama. He was right.
Alabama and GT continued playing one another for years after the Yellowjackets left the SEC.

Back then, Alabama was to the SEC what Texas is to the Big 12. We could do whatever we wanted because we deserved it. So

Sewanee: The University of the South
Hell of a party school, they would have some epic tailgates if they were still in the SEC.

I also heard he gave them unmarked ATM cards.
Come on. Auburn is historically one of the dirtiest programs ever. If Vandy wants to complain, then ok. If you want to complain about other teams, then Eric Ramsey say shut up. Until you can control Pat Dye and his pants, you should probably not talk about uneven playing fields.
Beyond that Auburn is kicking butt at oversigning.com. Number 1 since 2002. Suck it Oregon!

Diggin' the Sewanee love in this thread. Be glad we're not in the SEC anymore because the Sewanee Tigers would have to show you boys how it is done

Wasn't there something unusual about Sewanee's school year? I think I read somewhere that they started their school year several months before other schools. Thus their footbal team had months of practice before playing against schools who started their school years around September 1st.

They were tired of the racists, rednecks and coonasses that permeate the SEC. Oh and the non-stop cheating.

I believe something that angered Dodd a lot about Alabama also involved this incident:
quote:
Highly-respected Atlanta Journal Constitution sports editor Furman Bisher wrote a lengthy article for The Saturday Evening Post entitled "College Football is going berserk" in which he claimed that Bryant coached his team to deliberately try and knock opposing players senseless using dirty and illegal tactics. Bisher had attended several Alabama practices and noted what he felt was an attempt to teach improper technique including the throwing of forearms which had resulted in Graning's injury.
Several years ago, Finebaum had Bisher on for an interview. Over 40 years later, Bisher was a still a seething ball of hate. I'm sure a shrink could fill up a notebook during a 60 minute session with him.

Sewanee- offically University if the South, is a great small school. Has a proud tradition on the lower divisions. I went to the 1-3 grades in Sewanee. My 3rd grade teacher was Mrs Majors, her husband was the football coach. Thier sons-
Johnny and Bobby Majors, cool.
