Tony Franklin was the final nail in Tuberville's pine box. Despite AU ultimately winning a title three years later with a different coach, I still think Tuberville should've been granted at least two more seasons to turn it back around as the dude earned it. It was only his first losing season in nine years and he was four years removed from being fricked out of the BCS Championship game.

On a similar note: I'd almost slice off my testicles and donate them to science just to see the melt if Auburn stole Freeze away from Old Mrs.

Just for future reference.

Tubberville had anger issues and it probably was detrimental to the team. Sorta like Petrino.

The truth, you guys can't handle the truth. He needed some time off, his wife was an alcoholic who was having a mid-life crisis. The 5-7 season started the conversation, but he had beaten Alabama 6 of 7 years and 7 of 10. He was a mutual decision if there ever was one, he could have come back. His kid is on the team and Tubs himself went to the BCS game wearing Auburn gear. Although most Auburn fans were OK with a change, I know very few that agreed after we hired Chiz.

Note: His wife was in a accident in Lubbock that killed an 87 year old man.

Chizik/Malzahn won them an actual National Title unlike Tuberville. Why should they care?

Tuberville went 13-0 as well. Hard to blame him for not winning the title.

But I read that if Auburn didn't lose to USC 23-0 the previous year that they would have had a shot at the title?

I also read that if Auburn started ranked higher that they would have had a shot at the title?

If those are correct, then whose fault was it that Auburn didn't get a shot at the title?

Why did Auburn get rid of Tuberville?

The correct answer is, of course, that they were trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Auburn football is the cornerstone of playing second fiddle. The two rivals for AU are Alabama and UGA, of which they share a state with Alabama. Both teams have more long term success, and in the head-to-head they are significantly behind Alabama and in a dead heat with UGA, and pretty much behind both schools by varying margins in all other metrics (SEC titles, 10+ win seasons, etc - Auburn only just passed UGA in poll National Titles in 2010).

So, ultimately, any coach unable to sustain long-term success in comparison to those two programs will ultimately be canned. Even Dye was shown the door (though much more gently than most others) after a 5-5-1 season where they were competitive in all but 2 losses, and all came against teams that finished the season ranked. The real reason, of course, was going 0-3 vs Alabama since Gene Stallings had been hired. Disregarding the fact that the last two losses were against Alabama teams that had finished a combined 24-1, AU fans wanted a change. The coach that had led them to great seasons in the 80s couldn't keep up with the Joneses, so out he went.

After that came Terry Bowden (prior to 1998 [being canned mid-season in '98], Mr. Bowden had gone a combined 46-12-1). Tuberville then came in (disregarding the whole Bill Oliver mess), has a great run against Alabama, has a 13-0 season and has a 4-season stretch where AU had 13,9,11, and 9 win seasons. The closest AU had to a stretch run of 4 straight 10 win seasons outside of 86-89 under Dye.

Tuberville, however, couldn't keep up with 'Bama. He had to go. One season of perceived weakness and out he went.

Then, Chizik comes in. Catches lightning in a bottle with an amazing defensive player and an amazing QB. Goes 8-5 prior to and after that season, then has 1 losing season. He's out.

In comes Malzahn. Has his big season, then goes 8-5. This year...

The fact is, AU has always suffered from delusions of grandeur. The late 80s gave them the impression that they should be a perennial top 10 team, but they simply are not. They have the right recruiting sources to get a couple of amazing athletes, make a run, then fall back to mediocrity for a few seasons. A new coach gets hired, gets a stellar athlete in just the right position, has a big season, then falls down to mid-pack. Rinse, repeat.

Blame Alabama, blame Georgia. Continual success at the two primary rivals will cause a neurosis of which there is no cure.

Not completely true about Dye. The NCAA sanctions had a lot to do with it as well.

I think the Tony Franklin experiment did him in.

Recruiting was hurting because of Saban, but Tubbs was pretty good at coaching the kids up.

I still think he had the right idea about changing the offense, it just picked the wrong guy to implement it. Combined with how well Saban was doing, it set him on the path of being fired.
