The ncaa never voted or endorsed any polls prior to the BCS.

The NCAA wasn't naming a title. It was simply acknowledging that sources had named a team a title holder in those years.

That's exactly my point. But Auburn fans like to ignore reality. It wasn't an endorsement of any team or any poll. Just their own version of a Wikipedia entry.

I had it at one time. Some of the Auburn posters were using it to claim 5 National Titles, until we counted up and found the site claimed 6 for Georgia. I'll see if I can find it. But it basically was saying that if any semi-credible source named a team a National Champion, then it counted.

Just use the records book. 5 for Auburn (1913, 1957, 1983, 1993, 2010) and 6 for Georgia (1920, 1927, 1942, 1946, 1968, 1980).

I don't recall Georgia fans having a lot of hate for Auburn until the 2010 game. Since then though...oh boy.

No doubt. the sweet thing is, after they brought that out as "proof" they were better than Georgia, I went through it and it showed Georgia with one more National Title than them.

Kinda backfired.

Here's what SEC schools could claim based on the records book. I actually have this memorized.

Alabama: 1925, 26, 30, 34, 41, 45, 61, 64, 65, 66, 73, 75, 77, 78, 79, 92, 2009, 11, 12, 15, 17
LSU: 1908, 35, 36, 58, 62, 2003, 07
Tennessee: 1938, 40, 50, 51, 56, 67, 98
Georgia: 1920, 27, 42, 46, 68, 80
Auburn: 1913, 57, 83, 93, 2010
Florida: 1984, 85, 96, 2006, 08
Ole Miss: 1969, 60, 62
Texas A&M: 1919, 27, 39
Arkansas: 1964, 77
Vanderbilt: 1921, 22
Kentucky: 1950
Missouri: 1960

And on first down, Alabama's Tua is dropped all the way back to the 42 yard line by a swarming Georgia defense. With a very shakey Bama placekicker, the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP is clearly in the Bulldogs' grasp. On second down Tua is chased back to the 49 yard line and throws it apparently up for grabs. NO - it is caught! It is caught for a touchdown!! OMG - Alabama wins the game. Alabama wins the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP on a miracle walk off the field play. Game over. Season over. The Alabama Crimson Tide steals a victory on a 49 yard bomb from inexperienced Bama QB Tua. The Georgia Bulldogs will once again go home heartbroken by an unbelievable miracle play. After 38 years of wandering in the wilderness, the Bulldogs must continue on their long-suffering effort for a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

That play was an example of "choking"???That play would succeed maybe once out of 20 times.

Nah,you guys gave up the 21 pt lead in the 4th qtr.

I am going to stop responding to Auburn troll threads. It has to be hard to be an Auburn fan. Your mist hated rival owns college football right now, and your other rival has owned you over the last 15 years. They love to talk about a few good teams that they had during this stretch, but they know they just aren’t a consistent team since rheyvran off Tubs.

That's pretty accurate. I was at UGA in the late 90s early 2000s, and Auburn was a pretty friendly rivalry. Always hated to lose that game, but when the game was in Athens it was the most fun party weekend of the year as so many Auburn students are from Georgia and we all know each other.

I've heard many UGA fans say that younger fans will claim UF as our biggest rival, while older fans will say GT. It really is GT and always will be, but because of the losing streak to UF, that sticks out more for younger fans and they want to beat UF more badly than GT now given the recent history, but that doesn't elevate them to our biggest rival.

I think the same applies to Auburn. UGA has dominated the series for some time, and some of their fans want to beat UGA worse than Bama because of it. It doesn't mean we're their main rival, it just sucks being dominated by a team you traditionally are pretty even with. Add 2010 and the UGA fans butthurt over Fairley and the Cam situation, that just added fuel to the fire.

I'd rank them as:

1. GT
2. UF
3. Auburn

This is the thing you continually do not seem to understand. Auburn isn't arguing superiority to uga throughout history. The point and the reason "1980" evokes this type of emotion from uga fans is because it was the only team in the modern era that accomplished enough to be selected National Champion. I know it was posted in this thread but it was a pretty weak schedule, but honestly you'd have to look at the teams that finished 2 and 3 or maybe even 4 to make a serious comparison of whether it was a title given as a beauty contest or actually earned. I'll let you look it up.

Since 1980 Auburn is proud of our ability to have seasons worthy of being selected National Champion. In 2010 winning it was pretty sweet, but honestly any Auburn fan who was around in 1983, 1993 and 2004 knows those teams could go toe to toe with anyone no matter what selector chose them or not. The results were proven on the field.

So uga has 6 National Title selection all before 1980...some of them are pretty suspect much like Auburn's 1913 selection. I honestly believe Auburn's 1914 team would have likely won a poll era title. The reason is simple the 1913 isn't really debatable, and the 1914 team only slipped up once on the road in Baton Rouge...a team coming off a championship season who slips up and has a comparable record to other teams often gets the benefit of the doubt in human opinion polls. So maybe Auburn should claim 6 not 5...I know some Auburn fans who believe it's 7. I'll let you figure out what year Auburn's players earned on the field the right for people to consider them a champion.

You can go with this if you want but in 10 seconds of looking at that list it is obviously a shitty list. Just a couple of examples for AU, AL, and FL.

For AU 1993 is on there and not 2004 (both perfect/undefeated seasons). In 2004 we were probably the best team in the country, won the SECCG and the Sugar Bowl. In 1993, we didn't play in either and were on probation. And FSU would have beat us if we had played them. FL would have lit us up in a rematch in the SECCG.

For Bama, 1941 is on there. Nough said, although 1925 and 1926 are two more easy to call out and male a case bama was not even a top 5 team in those years.

For UF, 1985? No. 9 wins and a final #5 ranking while not playing in a bowl is not a national champ.

This thread has popped up a handful of other times over the season and every time the general consensus is Florida, and I agree.

1. UF

2. Auburn
3. Tech/Tennessee

I think 6 is probably correct for us. 7 legit claims, 5 very strong ones where it is hard to argue any team has a stronger claim, 1 that is a very weak claim as the best team, 1 that is questionable.

The weak one is 1993. We were the only undefeated team in the country at 11-0, but FSU (the 1 loss national champ) was objectively better and probably would have beat us in the bowl game. Also, spurrier would have probably beat us in an SECCG rematch. We beat them at JH, barely and we were beat to hell after playing a 1 loss Bama the last weekend of the season.

The 1914 one is a maybe.

1913, 1957, 1983, 2004, and 2010 are all years we were the best and most deserving team in the country and very legit and hard to dispute.

So 5 or 6 is very fair number for us and easily defended.
