Would a coach like Bear Bryant be able to compete with modern day coaches under present day conditions?

Would he have won 6 national titles? Probably not. However, I see no reason he wouldn't be an elite coach if he was born 50 years later.

Also, I don't see why people would mention guys like Paterno as evidence that Bryant couldn't win in today. I'd bet Paterno aging had more to do with his record slipping than the fact that the game changes.

I pulled out my Ouija Board and asked the Bear if he could win today and he said," Hell No but that Les Miles is a damn fine football coach"!!!!

Today's NCAA wouldn't have put up w/Bear Bryant's BS....

Nah, seriously, Coach Bryant would have done fine in today's environment. I'm with the "a winner's a winner's crowd".

It's not like Alabama was ubersuccessful before Coach Bryant got there.

Charlie Mac and Bear would do just fine today. Both men were charismatic and knew how to work alumni, boosters, media etc.

Wow, what momment it would have been to have had a drink with Mac and the Bear together.

Alright the Bear won a sec title at kentucky and that team broke OU's 58 game winning streak. Chip kelly would not be allowed to even wash the bear's joke strap. JMO

This is a stupid argument. Are you using a time machine to get Bear Bryant here? If not, then he'd be born in this age, just like all the other coaches and would adapt however he needed.

I'm a believer that the game is improving constantly over time in most areas. People work the kinks out over time, and the game evolves. I don't think Bear could have near the success today as a coach, just like I don't think old school Hall of Famers would shine in today's games

This is pure BS yungsta. Would a 6'2", 210#, 9.4 100yd do it today in your experienced opinion? See if you can guess who this might be from '58-'59.

There may be fitter, stronger and generally faster atheletes in football today, but to just disqualify hall of famers of the past is just pure stupidity and lack of mature understandings of history.

Wasn't Bear a big drunk? I don't know how that would fare in today's game.

Yeah, but can you imagine just how pissed off he'd be now since there aren't any Chesterfields around anymore. He'd be rippin' and spittin' Winston filters and tobacco all over the place, yellin' "Bingo"! Hell, he'd probably take the band and cheerleaders along to spring practice, too. Then, they'd make another really bad movie about him, but this time it will be called "The Junction Girls Gone Wild".

Stupid thread

+1

Bear's game plan dominate on the ground and pass to keep the defense honest. Kinda sounds like what LSU & Bama are still doing today! Kelly couldn't hold Bryants jock. Are you old enough to have seen Bear coach football? The best coach I have even seen druck or not. Probably back in the 60's and 70's 75% of the coaches were drunks.

This thread is assinine.

Great leaders are great leaders in any era. Bryant inspired his players with great leadership and personal charisma - then he disciplined them to execute to perfection. Xs and Os are the same today as they were in Bryants era - he saw defense as the most lethal weapon and it's still the most effective weapon any team can present in any coolege football game. Defense wins championships. Bear Bryant learned that axiom as a player at Alabama and used it every day of his career. Bryants offensive strategies were determined his talent. When he switched to the wishbone Bryant was the first to combine a strong passing game into it. Bryant fielded a strong passing game into his wishbone - he was the first to make it a true run/pass option offense.
