If Memphis wins their conference, and they are rated higher than any of the other G5 conference champs, they are an automatic qualifier.
They are the highest ranked G5 team in the coaches' pre-season poll. If the playoff were decided off the pre-season poll, Memphis would be in, and Tennessee would be left out. Of course, a lot of things are going to change between now and the final CFP poll, but that is just an example of how easy it could be for Memphis to get into the playoff.
