How has this thread reached 6 pages and 2012 Sumlin not come up a single time?
- First year in the SEC for A&M
- Inherits a Heisman Trophy winner who won it with a style and ability that literally had nothing to do with following a plan from his coach
- Inherits a defense that had been built up for him and would never again be that good.
- Perfect storm at Bama game (reunion of Bear's legacies, national TV, QB tailor-made to beat a Saban team) catapults the entire program like lightning in a bottle.
He was able to sucker punch the SEC with talent he had very little to do with, then parlay that into over $30 million between A&M and Arizona, even though 2012 was the last time he hit double digits in wins.

Anyone except Georgia. They are never lucky.
We were lucky that Herschel Walker didn't pick Clemson....That's been the extent of our luck.

Anyone listing Gus for 2013 is just butthurt. Dude took over a 3-9 team and took them to the fringe of a national championship.
You forgot to explain why he wasn’t lucky

That's pretty lucky.
Is it though? Both the Kansas St. (lost by 28) and Ohio St. (lost by 31) teams mentioned got crushed in both their losses. The 2011 Oklahoma St. I’ll give you because it was a 3 point loss, but it’s not like the ‘12 Baylor team and ‘17 Iowa team were lucky to beat their teams. The teams they beat weren’t winning those games those two respective days no matter what.
And a good number of NC teams have needed help from other teams to win the NC. The 2014 OSU team got in because Baylor lost to a 7-6 WVU team. 2007 LSU team needed a lot of upsets to get in despite two losses of their own. The 2006 Florida team needed USC to lose to an unranked UCLA team. Bama has quite a few because Bama almost always has 0 to 1 losses by the end of the regular season so are in position to move up almost every time.
