That is correct, however the redshirt rules were different in 1988 (Gardere's true freshman year) than they are today. Gardere participated only on the practice squad and never played a down during redshirt year. His 4 wins were all non-redshirt.

Ironic indeed as during his football career Oklahoma was always the higher ranked team and Texas usually unranked.

For Mississippi State it is John Bond (1989-1983) vs LSU (I know we aren’t their main rival). Per Wikipedia:

Gary Gibbs started in 89. Was OU on probation? How many scholarships did OU lose? Switzer left a mess.

Five in a row, 2000-2004. Texas went untouched in 2005.
