MSU charters from a variety of airlines, primarily Delta, Sun County, and Southwest. All flying is done at Golden Triangle Regional Airport (GTR) for football which is about 20 minutes from campus. Other sports use Starkville (STF) (Bryan Field) airport, as well as GTR.

actually might be the newer 737's that fly them.

KTUP has a runway length of just over 6500 feet
OUX is only 5600.

The 737-600 and 700's can take up in less than 6000 feet. Pretty sure that's the model aircraft that I've seen fly them out.

Not large enough for 150+ people like when the football team travels. Could be wrong...but I think they get 777's to charter the football team, staff, boosters, etc.

There is no way Ole Miss needs a 777 for charter flights. They do not fly far enough or have enough ppl. A 737 should be more than big enough.

Typically no. A 737 7/800 needs about 6500-7000ft of runway to operate at gross weight. UOX and STF can't reliably handle aircraft that size at takeoff weight. GTR can handle anything and TUP can handle most aircraft at high takeoff weights.

I think Alabama discontinued using the Capstone the night before games. I think they go to MS now.
I think I'm correct on these:
Auburn-Columbus GA- bus to game
Ole Miss- Tupelo- bus to game
MSU- Columbus MS-bus to game
LSU-Covington or Hammond- fly to game
UT-Oak ridge TN- fly
UGA- Tucker area- fly
A&M-North Houston- fly
USCe-Not sure-fly

I think everyone that plays Bama now pretty much stays in B'ham and flies into B'ham with the exception of those that bus.

Good thing is charters for the team are typically lighter weight. The majority of the cargo is taken ahead of time by the 18-wheeler. So it's just carrying the people and a carry-on. It doesn't need anywhere close to 7000 ft to take off/land.

and I was just able to verify that 737's are used in KTUP. Also that their runway is 7200 feet since last expansion. But that the 737's don't take up NEARLy that much. They could comfortably take off/land on the old runway length that I posted earlier.

I believe Ben Epps had 737s running when only 5800 feet. However, they expanded to allow for heavier plans and more passengers. They can now take 737s with up to 100 people a piece on them.

UGA will be using 2 717s courtesy of Delta.

We love to fly and it shows.

I never stated that 737's can't use TUP. I said they can't use UOX or STF for football charters, and they don't for the reason I stated. GTR and TUP are suitable for aircraft of that size and weight. Buses may transport equipment but are also needed to transport the team once they arrive at destination.

We fly out of CoMo, and have no idea where they stay. Some area 51 type stuff.

ah.....didn't realize you were just repeating exactly what I already posted. Was a bit misleading.

Didn't that used to be the TAF building (or the TAF was in there at one time)?

A 737-700 could probably takeoff from a 5800ft runway with 120-130 football players and staff on a 90 degree day, but I wouldn't want to be on it. I can assure you

Ah, I see they are giving you those old hand-me-downs they are leasing from Southwest/Airtran after the merger and Southwest staying with 737's only.

Delta wanted the 717's and have refurbished them. They aren't old at all.

Renaissance Hotel & Spa. Interesting that the other team will stay right across the street.

quote:

Auburn's football team has set up camp at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center before its home football games.

Many foes have set up shop across the street at the Embassy Suites. So far this year, South Carolina, Arkansas and LSU have been guests at the Embassy.

That makes the street between the hotels almost a ground zero the night before the game, but the hotels like it.

Kentucky stays in the Hilton in downtown Lexington for home games. Approximately 5 minutes from the stadium.

They fly out of the Bluegrass Airport (LEX) but I have no idea what on.

Also, I have to imagine that they bus to Louisville and maybe Vandy/UT. They probably fly everywhere else.
