I get what you're saying but Saban has had to deal with much more restrictive rules and limits.

It just is what it is. Bryant was still years ahead of everyone else and is GOAT 1B to GOAT 1A of Saban.

The Bear would kill it in modern day football. Defenses couldn’t handle a HUNH wishbone attack.

Remains to be seen. Coach Bryant is the "Babe Ruth" of college football. A legend bigger than life and try as they may, not a Barry Bonds in the bunch that's going to change Paul "Bear" Bryant's place in Crimson and college football folklore.

You must be 12 years old. I can assure you that EVERYONE thought Bryant looked cool in that houndstooth. Whether they admitted it or not

Regardless of era, great coaches would be great coaches. It is less about the formation era than it is the ability to get men to play beyond their abilities and to do it collectively with singleness of purpose.

He’s been dead for nearly 40 years and still inspires this type of jealousy and hatred from opposing fans.
That should tell you just how badly he curb stomped their asses over and over again for so many years. Damn that must hurt.

I remember back in the early 1970s I used to work out at this gym where a lot of jocks haunted. One was a senior in high school and a Parade All American football player. He used to bring all these letters from just about every major football power in the country, not just saying "we are looking at you," but offering him a grant in aid right upfront. He said they were all wasting their time, because both his parents and a sister had graduated from Georgia, so guess where he was going? Well, a couple of days before signing day I saw on the local news that he had publically committed to Alabama. I saw him at the gym a few days later, and he told me that if Bear Bryant came to my house and offered me a scholarship to come to Bama I'd never be able to turn him down. He said he thought his mom was getting ready to dump his old man and run off with Coach Bryant. He also said when he walked into the living room it was like his presence was so big that he filled the entire house up. This guy went on to letter all 4 years and even start a few games his freshman year, and was all SEC his junior and senior year.
So yea, Bear Bryant was absolutely a big deal and still is.

Saban never coached against legends like Bryant did.

Bryant faced Paterno, McKay, Ara, Hayes, Dooley, James, ……. Many of the stadiums today are named after coaches Bryant faced.

Pretty meaningless data point.

People are only Legends in the past. Meyer will be a legend. Stoops is a legend in the future, too.

And yeah he played them. Sometimes. And sometimes he won. But the bulk of his games were not against the Joe Paternos of the world

what Saban has done in the most competitive era of CFB ever

What?

Not taking anything away from Saban but this era isn't close to being the most "competitive ever"

The Pac 12 isn't close to it once was or the BIG XII.Traditional powers like Nebraska,Texas,Tennessee or even Michigan are a shadow of themselves not to mention schools like Miami or FSU.

Maybe Saban is the reason for the inequity but either way, there are some serious balance of power issues in today's CFB.

Notice how I didn’t say Bryant in my list of coaches which would indicate that he is clearly #2 in a category by himself, much like Saban is.

It was Saban who established Alabama as the #1 college football program of the modern era, and that’s not insulting Bear at all.

By the end of the 1979 season:

Alabama had 6 poll era national titles.

Notre Dame had 7 poll era national titles.

USC with 5 poll era national titles.

Oklahoma with 5 poll era national titles.

There wasn’t any clear separation from Alabama and others. It was Saban who truly separated Alabama from the rest.

Honestly, you have no idea what you are talking about. Except for the Rose Bowl, all the bowls waited for Alabama to pick before they would. Even after the Sugar went SEC, Orange Big 8 and Cotton SWC, they waited.
