The answer is because for MOST of the country the idea of running up coaching salaries that high is distasteful. They don't want other ADs giving them crap for running up the cost for everyone.

Is that why Ole Miss paid Hugh Freeze over 4 million a year because that's the market rate in Mississippi? Why is the salary discrepancy between Jimbo and McElwain over 2 million? It has nothing to do with regional markets and everything to do with what specific ADs are willing to pay and what the market dictates for that particular coach based on what it will cost to keep him, lure him away from another team, or based on his resume as a coach. This is dictated by the college football market, not some imaginary TX market. TX schools just have ADs who have the money are and willing to spend the money, regardless of whether or not it is above market value for said coach.

Well Stoops has earned his pay IMO. Been there a long time, record is 168-44, been to what, 4 National Titles?

Is pay a lifetime achievement award, or what you did that season? He hasn't been to a national title for years before Sumlin even came to A&M.

Did Stoops earn that $5+ million last year winning 8 games in a weaker conference than the SEC? Why didn't Sumlin then earn his money for winning 8 games in a harder conference?

The only reason is some lifetime achievement metric.

Sure, its the percentage of the market that your product offering accounts for.

Ole Miss is paying Hugh over $4 million a year for the EXACT same reason Sumlin is being paid $5 million a year.

In fact of the two I would argue Sumlin is more "worth" the money, seeing as how he gave us our best season since 1956 and presided over a time when we raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the program.

Well that falls apart when you look at a guy like Les. Given what Jimbo, Saban and Stoops makes Les should EASILY be over $5 million a year.

Obviously there are differences by region and in contract timing.

market share is specific to sales and how those sales compare to the sales of the overall industry. It has nothing to do with payment of employees. I know you know this.

the word you're looking for is 'precedent'.

More like "market pressures."

Yeah or just market.

Les has the highest paid staff in the country. He hasn't threatened to leave for more money. Michigan didn't call him and the last raise he got when the Arkansas job was only due to his contract coming to an end. Les could easily make over 5M a year.

the pressure was not from Texas, which has been your point the whole time. The market pressure came from USCw, which you've also stated. There is no race to pay coaches in Texas.
