Before the BCS the major bowl's had conference tie-ins. Many years the top two teams were playing in different bowls. This is why the BCS was formed.

What's your point exactly? There were several times before even the BC that at least the AP title was on the line for both teams. That's a title game.

Prior to the BCS era there was never a single bowl game that guaranteed the winner would be the national champion for that year. Therefore, no title game prior to the BCS era.

Those were self-proclaimed "National Championship" games by the bowls themselves; neither was an official title game, as voters were not bound to vote for the winner and could have voted a different team national champion.
