Trying to displace LSU as the big flagship school in the state.

per law, no Louisiana university can refer to themselves as the flagship

A.
As previously stated, there is no main campus for the University of Louisiana
System. Any designation of or reference to a member institution as “flagship,”
“lead,” “main,” or other similar descriptor is prohibited.

I saw multiple ULL hats with LSU shirts last weekend in BR on gameday.

Section d of Louisiana State law 45. Why then wasn't LSU renamed The University of Louisiana at Baton Rouge?

Because it is THE Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College.

Because the University of Louisiana system and the Louisiana State University system are separate educational entities.

The rich people in Lafayette decided that they prefer to use Louisiana over Lafayette. If the other schools had that kind set, it would comical to see ULL(Louisiana) vs ULM(Louisiana)... both of which had Louisiana plastered on their jerseys.

However... there's already a Louisiana Collge in Pinevile/Alexandria area.

They aren’t actually “Louisiana” like the way Texas or Cal refers to themselves as such...the name of the university is “The University of Louisiana at Lafayette.”

The name of University of Texas is: "The University of Texas at Austin"
The name of Cal University is: "University of California, Berkeley"

So the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is indeed just like Texas and Cal.

But the original University of Louisiana became The Tulane University of Louisiana when Paul Tulane bought it from the state and turned it private. They still have "University of Louisiana" in their official seal:

Note that the university was founded in 1834, but wouldn't be known as Tulane until the sale 50 years later in 1884.

An older one:

They’d probably beat LSU this year.

They're certainly no ULM.

They aren't a bad football program but they aren't going to upset many P5 programs even on a good year.

They should've beaten us in 2012. We had to block a punt at the end of the game and return it for a touchdown.

Cal-Berkeley & UT-Austin are FLAGSHIPS

UL-Lafayette is simply a member of the UL system JUST like Northwestern State, Mcneese, Nicholls etc.

The true story is that when they switched from USL, they made the NCAA Basketball Tournament the first year they were ULL.

They had tried to change it in 1984 but LSU nixed it.

They had a huge PR push to call themselves Louisiana at that tournament and it stuck. I had just finished grad school at LSU and I was working at Louisiana-Monroe. It hit ULM like "Why didnt we think of that."

I've always known them as Louisiana Lafayette. When the name change? And why?

It's kind of annoying. In planning a camping trip that weekend. I can't just say we're playing Louisiana, because they'll think I mean LSU. Lafayette is a cool little town. They might as well embrace it. To change it now just seems weird and little brotherish.

They did try to brand themselves as the Louisiana Indians. It didn’t work. Their fan base was way to pissed off about the name change to ULM from NLU.

When you think of high quality colleges in Louisiana, there is only ONE school that comes to mind. The Tulane Green Waves.
