When did a formalized conference schedule become a thing?

It looks like for a LONG time we didn’t have a conference schedule. Teams didn’t play the same number of games and teams also didn’t have any formula from who they played outside of their regular rivals. Do y’all have any insight into the good ole days?

When it became easier to travel. Wasn’t always easy to get from Athens to Baton Rouge and back. One reason we played so little.

I'd love to get back to playing Clemson every year

An unbalanced formalized schedule was started in 1992. Whether a balanced formalized schedule starts in 2026, let’s just say, i hope to be alive for whatever it is.

IIRC, it started in the mid to late '70s when each team played 6 games(5 perm and 1 rotating). Changed sometime in the '80s to 7 games with the same 5 permanent. Bama and Ole Miss played each other in '80 & '81 but the games didn't count in the standings.

It wasn't uncommon in the 60's and earlier to regularly schedule a conference opponent for an OOC game. They were often close, and familiar.

Completely and totally wrong. The 1980-81 Bama-Ole Miss games are the only two regular season games ever played between two conference opponents that did not count in the standings. And the only reason they were not counted is because the "Six Conference Game Minimum Rule" was expanded to the "Six Conference Game Minimum/Maximum Rule" in 1980. Bama and Ole Miss already had the seventh game(s) scheduled and did not want to cancel them, therefore they were played as OOC games.

There were no divisions with permanent and rotating teams until 1992. Schools made out their own schedules prior to that. And ALL games scheduled were counted in the standings.
The schedule was reduced to a maximum of 6 games in 1980. Which is why the Bama-Ole Miss games of 1980-81 did not count in the standings. The schedule was then expanded to 7 games in 1988.
