They choose not to play in a conference and could not survive in major 4 conferences

Back during limited TV appearances... Notre Dame was the only team that had their own nationally televised playback show on Sunday mornings (with Lindsey Nelson).
Flashback:
"The Irish were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt..." as the camera panned the crowd.
WAY before ESPN and cable/satellite TV.

There’s the historical preferential treatment that has negatively affected many programs over the decades, and fans have long memories.
It seems to be getting worse by the way in the current version of the cfp. Notre Dame gets an equal vote to each FBS conference. Their vote is worth more than Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Tennessee, and LSU combined. Let that sink in.

and actually a disproportionate amount seemingly from Aggie. what gives ?
Somehow Bama getting in is a problem for Notre Dame despite them losing worse to Clemson in their conference championship game rematch in 2020 which screwed A&M who was arguably the better team. All the talking heads acted like the Irish making the playoff was a foregone conclusion that year despite getting trucked by a Clemson team with Trevor Lawrence unlike in the first meeting. I understood why A&M missed out, but I'm very happy that ND isn't getting the same preferential treatment they've clearly received in the past. Aggies essentially ended their season after the first few weeks in their house.

Fan base that is more arrogant than Bama, Ohio State, or Georgia but with no hardware to back it up

I don't know why they should have been left out. If winning the SEC is meaningless as some here today have proclaimed, why should a team get any credit for not winning it.
