Definitely sounds like something a lawyer came up with and he was probably reading from as it was a radio interview.
As well as the repeated usage of the phrase "no direct communication" as opposed to "I am certain I never spoke to her in any way".
Now he just "does not remember".

In any type of situation like this, lawyers are going to be involved telling everyone what to say.
No public figure makes statements on their own when accused of something.
