What's the deal with Squirrel White?

He had 65 catches last year, looked like a developing star but hasn't done much of anything this season.
Does he just suddenly suck or are they saving him for some reason?

When they are at their best they spread it around. They've done that so far with Thornton, Brazzell, McCoy and Squirrel (along with Sampson).

The starters are just not getting reps. 12 guys have 2 or more catches so far. But Squirrel is still over 20 yards a reception on 5 catches.

The starters were out early in the 3rd in that game. And White was the leading receiver in that game.

I think it's just a matter of spreading the ball around, getting everybody a little time instead of a few guys getting a lot of action. We legitimately have a dozen good pass catchers, counting the 3 tight ends.

That's great against Kent State, but when they play Bama, et al, one WR isn't just as good as another. If their best ones don't have game reps, they won't be prepared.

I don't know why you would question the statistical output of any individual when we are top 3 nationally in scoring and yards on offense and defense. You can question the competition and overall strength of the team, but individual stats mean nothing in this situation.

You seem concerned.
VERY concerned.
Noted.

Sorry. Carry on, but I still don't think throwing it to 15 different guys is the slick move some seem to think it is.

This isn’t true Smokey. I just watched highlights of Iamaleava throwing a TD with 9 min left in the fourth.

I think they are saving him and protecting him from early injury while we played the cream puffs.
You don’t want to risk injury like Bru McCoy last year
I wouldn’t build parlays on anyone this early in the season
Plus they may not want other teams to see much of him on film.
We have 2 difficult road games coming up

Last season Squirrel was the only guy with experience left when Bru got hurt. Then Donte got hurt. That left Squirrel the only go to option, especially since unlike mere mortals, Squirrel could actually catch Milton’s passes.
This season, the WR corps is overloaded with talent AND Nico can and does throw all over the field. He hasn’t favored a WR route or position the way a lot of QBs do. We’ve also been running the ball a metric ton. Squirrel is doing fine but he’s not the sole passing option this season.

Ah, now we have the real point. I wouldn't play any Tennessee receiver - WR or TE - this season. QB1 and RB1, sure. But all the receivers are too iffy game to game.

No one aside from Tennessee fans knew who the hell Jalin Hyatt was before TSIO 22. That team did what this one does… spread em out and take what the defense gives you.

UTC Moore started the second
Nico did play the 3rd against NCST
And pulled in the 2nd qrt vs Kent ST.
I miss spoke he played all of the 3rd not half of it Vs NCST.

I’m saying I saw Iamaleava throw a TD with 9 min left in the fourth against NC st.
All good. He is a good one and will give us fits. Hopefully the OU D can confuse him.

You made a mistake in thinking that he would be the dominant receiver. You should have done more research.

I lose sleep over it. DJ can you do a full spectrum breakdown of why the Vols projected starts are just not getting reps this year? Are they injured? Are they suspended? Were they recruited over?
The team seems to be doing pretty well so maybe it’s addition by subtraction.
