This statement makes no sense. Throughout history Auburn football has played tough defense and adequate offense. Hell Bama won a national title in 1992 with pretty much a below average offense. I know the game has changed, but Auburn was playing LSU, which more than any other team today still plays the old smash mouth offense. I don't think the lack of offense had anything to do with the defense performance Saturday. Auburn's defense just isn't any good.

Boom puts in Jeff Holland and Cowart and let's them rip some heads off. Sean White isn't the only underclassman that is about to bump an upperclassman. Boom is pissed, and he's gonna find somebody that wants to hit.

I do like how the Aubies were quick to point out Kevin Steele's 70 pts given up in his last game vs a LOADED WVU offense (keep in mind clemson also turned the ball over 4 times) but glossed over the school record 700+ yds 'Boom's' Florida defense gave up vs Bama last yr.

You are correct. And I really don't know a solution to that. You either love to hit or you don't. If anybody can straighten it out, I would think Muschamp can. It might take a year or two, though.

If you had asked me three weeks ago I would never believe Muschamp would be there two years from now, but with the lack of defensive improvement so far I don't know what team will hire him as a head coach right now. Some small schools probably would, but I doubt he would leave for those unless he just wants out.

It's a little scary that you guys can't see the most obvious glaring issue.

We had a lot of eggs in the basket of a QB that has unequivocally sucked arse. It's really not up for a different take/interpretation. It isn't route running or OL blocking. It's that Jeremy Johnson is not at all what he was expected to be- and worse- not at all the bare minimum for an SEC QB.

Throw turnovers and shitty field position over to a weak-to-rebuilding defense and you've got a grease fire pretty quick.

People are overcomplicating this

I agree that Gus and the staff missing on Johnson is a HUGE part of what ails Auburn but you have to admit that Boom's defense shouldn't get much of a pass. Especially when you figure their first 3 games have hardly been against offensive juggernauts and his defense has given up 400+ in each game.

QB is the biggest, most obvious issue, but not the only one. It is going to take time to get that D turned around. Right now, they are poor tacklers and a lot of them have bad mechanics/fundamentals. Muschamp will get that fixed in time and it remains to be seen if the QB issues are fixed with the change this weekend.

I will certainly admit it- but contrary to what you guys say, I never would have been a person to claim Boom would turn it around in the first part of season 1.

My hope would have been for a great offense and another year of bend-don't-break defense, or even a middle of the road defense. It's hard to know exactly how bad the defense is falling short for that because a) we can't pass and thus b) the other team stacks the box and stops the run. Turn it over a few times a game, never string together a good drive to burn time and drive across the 50, and really I can't say I'm surprised that the defense looks this way. My prospects for the season hinged on the defense defending against kick-off/deep punt oriented drives. They needed real help from the offense to be able to hit what my personal modest expectations of them were, so surprising this is not.

They do have some tackling issues. Hope we can at least get it together to build some confidence and have some close games this year, even if WL record is saved for future years.

Spot on.

QB, while undeniably the most visible position, is still only one guy. The bigger challenge is still the defense. The systemic problems that existed last season are still present, they started the season with depth problems, and now they've also lost two key contributors (one a potential superstar) for the season. Even if White turns into Tom Brady the second he steps onto the field, the problems on defense alone will still make winning against quality opponents difficult.

1. Even as an AU fan who didn't buy into the JJ hype, nobody saw JJ being as poor as he has. That has totally handicapped the offense.

2. The defense has a lot of talent but it was very thin and has been hit with a load of injuries.

3. The team wasn't mentally strong enough to handle this combination and basically folded.

Just remains to be seen if Gus can get them back before it's too late and he goes the way of Chizik after 2012.

I agree and don't doubt it. But with even a serviceable QB to help our offense AND defense, we don't go into OT versus Jax St and wouldn't have gotten blown out to the same degree by LSU.

We're used to shitty defense at this point. I speak for myself in that I draw the line with this staff at anything less than an excellent offense at the same time.

It's the scoreboard effect. Every team that gets a stupid new scoreboard cannot afford to pay their players for the season. The players are not happy about this decision at all and it is really starting to show on the field.

Understood and I'm pretty sure that's why Gus made the change so fast. The defense likely simply doesn't have the time or people to get a whole lot better this season so unless the offense improves it will likely be a struggle to get bowl eligible.

Question? To play the style of football AU runs,
how important is it for the offense to put up 28+ points to take pressure off a defense that may lack depth because
of the numbers needed to run that offense? Can Auburn win with fields goals and strategy? Thanks

Yeah, if he wants to be WRONG.

AU gave up 24 points on LSU's first five drives. They managed to stop one drive (most because LSU threw an incomplete pass on first down) out of those five drives. The offense was working out of a hole from the start of the game because their defense is inept, not "thin".

Besides, with the way AU has recruited the past few years, if their defense is "thin" they have only themselves to blame.

I think Gus is having trouble finding a virgin to sacrifice, down at Auburn. Too many cherries were popped after kick 6.

Kinda' hearing through the grapevine that this true....seems like he has seen enough and a bunch of "entitled" upperclassmen will gather splinters in their arse this week.....the youngun's will screw up royally, but they will screw up going full steam and will learn on the job....it really is time to get them on field and let the defense be THEIR defense before these bruce jenner type upperclassmen ruin them....boom is pissed and he is going in a new direction....just have a program handy on Saturday and get familiar with the new numbers
