The color hasn't changed. The school is pretty particular about that. TVs have though. HD kind of makes it pop.
During the Tuberville era, the fans were wearing a lot more of it though, and many of those shirts are a brighter orange than what you would see on our jerseys.

I seem to recall it changing during Chizik's time.

It’s the same. Google and look at older pictures. I just looked at the pictures of Sullivan and Beasley. Same color.

The color is supposed to be similar to UT Austin.

Before moving to Louisiana I lived and grew up in Bama and was a huge Auburn and Bo fan. 100% certain that orange is brighter now.

The orange helmet stripe is now metallic. The change was made last year.

Not to be a smartass, but could it be because the picture is better?

There's no question. The color used to be burnt Orange, identical to Texas. It's definitely brighter.
The deeper burnt orange looked better.

You're wrong.
The board of trustees voted on the schools colors in 1949, when Auburn was still called the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Looking back in the minutes the board was presented with several color swatches to assist them in selecting the exact colors.
According to the minutes Auburn’s first official colors were technically called ultramarine blue and golden orange.
“They have varied over time and have tended to have gotten brighter and sharper,” Coleman said.
The colors today are more commonly referred to as burnt orange and navy.
Auburn has now been sporting orange and blue for over a century.

As most designers know, precise color matching can be difficult depending on the medium being used, and the art or special effects being used. OCM recommends the following PMS colors for their proven versatility and quality consistency across multiple mediums:
Orange PMS 158
Blue PMS 289
CMYK percentages for PMS-289 and PMS-158 are:
PMS-289 cyan 100, magenta 64, black 60, (no yellow)
PMS-158 magenta 61, yellow 97, (no cyan, no black)
In recent years, although it does not appear to be the original Auburn Orange, Orange PMS 172 has been used, with mixed results. Vendors and designers have noted that screen effects with 172 usually result in various shades of pink, and darker versions frequently appear red, limiting creative uses of the color and leading many to select alternate shades of orange.
As OCM develops a design standard for the campus, we will move toward PMS 158 as the official color to avoid these problems, and to more closely match historical Auburn Orange. In the interim, either PMS 158 or 172 may be used; however, we strongly advise careful review of printer proofs if Orange 172 is used, due to its often extreme quality variations.

It's still orange. Regardless, it still sucks

Not talking about the chrome.
I looked at the style guide. Auburn has indeed adopted a second official color of orange. They have pantone 158, which is almost identical to Texas' 159. They also use pantone 172.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the adoption occurred when they started the All Auburn, All Orange campaign in (2003ish?) and started pushing the fans to wear only Oorange to games.
Either that, or they let someone at Under Armor convince them that the brighter color is better for branding.

I mean as a kid the material on my clothes and fans clothes was a darker shade than it looks like today. Closer to a burnt orange like someone mentioned

For the record, the AU style guide recommends PMS 158 for printed materials, as it is more professional. The brighter 172 is meant for apparel. I guess that means uniforms, too.

when we switched to Under Armour.
The blue isn't as dark as it used to be either.
