What was Auburn thinking?

I understand not settling for just good. Even with the large buyout, it was time to make something happen. Good for them. A&M took similar grief with Sumlin and you see how he turned out.
But it appears they'd didn't have a plan in place for a replacement. How do you get the green light to spend 20M on the buyout, but don't have your next coach lined up?
I would think they'd be better off stomaching one more year of Gus and work the back channels targeting and confirming the next choice. That way your 2021 season isn't a complete bust because we know Gus can win you 8 easily. Plus the buyout drops and you, ideally, get an upgrade.

Well the people who paid the buyout want Steele. The only thing that will stop them is a Tennessee like fan reaction to Schiano.

Its been a few days. Unreal. If we do hire Steele, then make fun of us all you want, we will deserve it. But the amount of folks just running with the internet rumors is hilarious. It's like folks have never seen a coaching search before.

Cuz it wouldve cost more to keep him, he makes 7 million a year, so auburn wouldve had to pay that and his buyout anyway. It was the cheapest time to fire him according to his contract.
All names thrown out there are merely speculation at this point. Its only been 3 whole days since Gus was fired.
No school makes a coaching change super quick, unless they are South Carolina.

It sounds like you've never seen a coaching search before.

We know you will. We would. And we will deserve every bit of it. Lots and lots of Auburn fans will be done. A lot of us were already apathetic. I'll be out until the new coach is hired in a few years, if they do go the Steele route.

I still refuse to believe the Barn Money Crew don't have someone already locked and loaded for this job. That guy must have a game to coach this Saturday. No way does the Barn promote K Steele to the big chair.

Auburn's inflated sense of self-importance is something that I've found as odd since we've come over to the SEC. Hell, I don't think I could point to Auburn on a map when we were in the Big 12.

Only if you hire an upgrade.
If you get stuck with Steele or something similar you'll end up wasting multiple years and more money before making the right hire.

Schiano would have been a disaster at UT.

Can't do it. If you don't have the right guy, you fire him. This has been bubbling for years.
If Gus goes 10-2 in 2021, he would keep his job again and you would have another season where he's still a ticking time bomb and old hat to the fans.
Sometimes coaches just have a shelf life, and when your program has Auburn's expectations, a guy like Gus can't be allowed to stick around if he's not competing for titles.
Auburn fans expected at least 1 playoff appearance in the CFP era and it hasn't happened. Maybe that is unrealistic considering what Alabama and Georgia are right now, but it's the expectation nonetheless.

God I hope they end up with Steele

He is a great coach. Just ask Baylor.

Yeah again. But there's absolutely nothing other than internet rumors supporting this.
If it were Steele it would be done by now (before early signing day). Now it may come to that and I'll be bummed if it does. I will really worry if the weekend passes and we haven't made a hire.

Absolutely. Ultimately, we ended up trading a shitty HC who has also covered up child rape, for a shitty HC that at least has never covered up child rape.
Even though Pruitt didn’t work out, Schiano Sunday was the correct move by the fans, and I will die on that hill.
