Hers an article about Ohio State players from 15 years ago getting in trouble for free tattoos. And they sold what was legally their merchandise. It seems like Pennies nowadays. But this is when the NCAA actually had some leverage.

Nebraska RB with his nice new car. Where's his bill of sale for that? How did he pay for it? even just the sales tax? how many former players ended up working for insurance companies after they put in their 4 years? Either pushed up to a management or exec position, or at least set up with sales that they usually couldn't even manage themselves. Free Shoes U? If you are asking if someone made a federal case out of it, with courtroom filings and proceedings, then no. Might as well ask if there's actually proof our congress is insider trading, or is it just something we say.
I get it. Did the blue bloods get away with it because they had connections in the NCAA offices that protected them, while others didn’t?

Saban quitting after NIL would be the biggest clue
Interesting.
Brings up a bigger question…how are any of the old win/loss records valid if cheating was that rampant?

The folklore at A&M includes Erik Dickerson driving a new Trans Am he got from a donor from BCS to SMU to sign his letter of intent.
The first chapter of The Junction Boys includes a description of A&M donors ponying up money so that the Bear could recruit. I don't have receipts, but I don't think anyone thinks he lied about that.

our new childrens hospital was just a front and the average person would have a hard time finding a charger on the dealership lot in Alabama
there is a reason Saban was heavily invested in car dealerships

I was thinking maybe in the case of illegal payments by administrators?

the non blue blood programs were also paying their players is the part they leave out.
They were the only ones the ncaa actually enforced though

is it just something people say to try to invalidate greatness?
That is the narrative the whorns use to explain how Oklahoma has ever beaten them and of course, they NEVER did it.

Survey Shows Large Number of Players Were Paid in College
This is from 1989.... think the payments magically stopped after that?

NCAA isn't a law enforcement agency and that's not a crime.

That was my concern, too.
