OMG....I must be a farm animal. I just assumed any poor guy with a 5 inch pecker was well below average. My bad.

Must suck to be 5'6 with an average peen nevertheless.

To be honest, I think the secret to his success is the level of control over the whole Alabama football program that he’s been given. He’s the general. He sets the vision and the direction and expects everyone to work toward them. I also think this is why he didn’t succeed in the NFL. Had Miami allowed him to run the franchise as he saw fit, I think he’d still be there and have at least two or three Super Bowl rings on his hand.

I don't think it's his level of control. Why? Saban was signing and sending studs to the NFL when he was at Michigan State. Tony Banks, TJ Duckett, Muhshin Muhammad, Demetrius Underwood, Julian Peterson, Plaxico, etc. Had Saban stayed at Michigan State I think he would've eventually won multiple national championships. I think it's outright coaching, mental toughness, and knowing when to cede control to other coaches. What do I mean? Saban lets his coaches coach. Many other coaches have to have things their way. Saban is wise enough to let other coaches have input into game planning especially if they are planning in such a way that is consistent with the strength of the player personnel.

He demands perfection from his coaches more than his players. He holds everyone accountable for what happens in games and practices

I think that sums it up. And, he does it every day.

He also gets five stars than don’t pan out, like everyone else. It’s a lot easier to develop talent when you roster is loaded with it.

% of 5stars drafted in first round

Bama 48.3%

Rest of college football 17%

Talent & Detail

This is the answer.

A few years back, I read an article about these manuals that Saban wrote that are position-specific and body type-specific, and are pretty thick. It lays out a diet and exercise regimen, sleep regimen, etc. There was a daily thought or quote included that the player was encouraged to reflect on. Each player got a manual and were expected to live it.

Pretty amazing stuff.

He’s intelligent. A lot of football coaches are just big dumb jocks.

All of this is great Sid. But it's honestly about having a stacked roster just like Bear had back in the day.

If all of this process bullshite was the main reason he would have won big at Michigan St. and Miami. If the SEC ever implemented a draft (sarcasm meter) he would retire immediately. He knows the fans and media eat up all this process garble.

But he knows he needs to be three deep at every position to win big. If not, he would not hang out in what is basically the NFL equivalent of MLB Triple-A baseball.

Straight talk.

Imagine if Miami had listened to Saban and signed Drew Brees? Would probably have a couple of Super Bowl championships and wouldn't be an 8-8 team year in and year out. Worked out great for Bama though.

They get better by having each other to practice against.

Saban always said at LSU functions he recruited wolves. He doesn't just look for physical talent but a certain mental characteristic.

That's not straight talk but simplistic and biased talk. While talent is necessary to build a championship program there is far more to it than that. That black cloud has blinded you.

This is the tip of the iceberg. Saban has taken the techniques that he brought to LSU and refined in the NFL to Bama. There. they have been redeveloped. Everything from Strength & Nutrition to motivational speakers to academic support to football enhancement has been thought out to the most minute degree. What players get in terms of support is light years ahead of LSU and other programs.

This isn’t a bad thing, but I view Saban as never satisfied, and that’s a credit to his success. I always have the mindset that after he hoists the National Chanpionship Trophy, gives some interviews; while the celebration is still ongoing, he is back at work doing what he can to gradually prepare for the next season.

Saban is the modern day John Wooden. His player development skills truly shows with his team week in and week out. Mistakes are few and far between. He could make a 25 cent piece of chocolate look like a Godiva Truffle when all said and done.
