To be fair, USC had sanctions against them left by pete Carroll and the Reggie Bush saga. Time will tell but at least we don't the have grinding Brian anymore.

Nope.

USC prospers despite sanctions

quote:

The administration might have decided to file an appeal for the same reason that anyone files an appeal -- to look for relief. But USC also filed an appeal to game the system. By delaying the scholarship penalties until the appeal had been heard -- and denied -- the Trojans could sign a full class of recruits in February 2011. In fact, because several players enrolled in January, the Trojans signed 31 players, well over the limit of 25. (Early enrollees may be assigned to the previous year's allotment.)

"I have to give a lot of credit to the university and to the president, Max Nikias," Kiffin said. "There were a lot of people saying to go the other way and just take it and get it over with. He had belief in our plan. ? And it was very glaring, very glaring what it would have done to our program not to sign that big class."

By effectively delaying the scholarship limits, USC set up the 2012 season as the eye of its storm. The Trojans have more experience and more players this season as they return to championship eligibility. Those assets are likely to diminish over the next two seasons as the scholarship reductions exact a greater toll.

He was fired a few games into that 2012 season.

Why?

LSU is a much better program than Ole Miss

He only had success at Ole Miss because of how weak the Ole Miss schedule was. Last year they played only 2 ranked teams in the SEC and went 1-1 against them after he blew a 9 point lead to Georgia. That was the weakest schedule in the SEC.

The previous year they had an even weaker schedule and a better team, but he managed to have 3 regular season losses including given Kentucky their only SEC win of the year. LSU fans should be very familiar as he also blew the game @ LSU to Brian Kelly that year.

The truth is, Kiffin chokes games away. It's why he got fired at USC too, ran his mouth constantly and then choked away games.

Same thing LSU fans claimed with "if Brian Kelly could get Notre Dame to the playoffs, he could do even more at LSU". Even while many of us pointed out he only did well when the schedules were easy.

Meanwhile, LSU has had only 1 season without 3 regular season loses in the past 12 years.

So basically, Kiffin's accomplishments are extremely exaggerated and so is the success of the LSU program.

Coaches can learn from their mistakes, so it's possible he could get better. But as I said, he's going to need to be a different coach than he has been to meet LSU expectations.

Brian Kelly: who, as we all remember, was a welcomed relief from Ed Orgeron...

Yep, my bad.

2012 was the year they started #1 in the country and finished 7-6.

Devils' advocate, they had 62 players that year and lost Devon Kinnard before the season even started.

That was their choice, they were allowed 75.

Sure, but only in theory. You could only hit 75 in year one because they lost 10 scholarships each year.

Also, Carroll had undersigned and several players transferred because of the bowl ban.

It wasn't cumulative. And as the article pointed out, they delayed it all during Kiffins years and used back signing to get over other limits like the 25 recruit limit. They were still under sanctions when Sark was hired as a result of the delay.

His plan for dealing with scholarships was a big part of why he was hired.

It has nothing to do with the reasons why he failed and was fired at USC.

What if

whoever the hell Arkansas hired turns out to be Chad Morris 2.0?

Kiffin achieved a level of success that Ole Miss hadn't achieved in 60 years.

Kiffin modernized a crappy, out dated Alabama offense and helped the Tide to another national title. He might have helped Bama to another if Saban hadn't got his panties in a wad .s
LSU is a greater brand, has greater tradition, better support, and access to more talent than he had at Ole Miss. Let's put this in terms a Hog will understand. He took a sow's ear and turned it into a silk purse at Ole Miss, previously known as "runts."

Hell, Kiffin may be good enough to turn Arkansas into a winner. That would be a fricking miracle.

I don’t know how Kiffin’s tenure will ultimately turn out—only time will tell. As an LSU fan, though, it’s refreshing to see real excitement around the program again. I honestly think he’ll do better at LSU than Kelly, and I’m looking forward to what next season brings.

The goal is to make it to CFP. If LSU averaged 27 points a game last year, LSU goes 10-2 and host a playoff game. Kiffin will hos offensive scheme and Baker defensive scheme will make LSU a contender each year.

First year may not make the CFP. Lots of new players and tough schedule and road games. Within 3 years, he will have LSU where LSU fans expect. He has already worked harder in the 7 weeks he has been HC than BK did in 4+ years.

If Lane gives LSU its best 5 year run in the history of the program, like he did with OM, I will be very happy.
