What if Georgia Tech and Tulane had never left the SEC?

Add GT & Tulane and there ya go!

LSU would actually have a rival and a losing record against Tulane.

in the 1990 realignment the SEC would not need to add anybody to have a SEC CCG. If they did expand in the early 90's it may have been to add academic as well as athletic schools. lets say Texas A&M and Maryland. Since the ACC only had 7 or 8 teams at this time, Kramer & Co may have gone straight for the jugular and picked off the ACC when they were still most vulnerable. Imagine if the SEC had added UNC and UVA back then when it was highly possible.

SEC 12= Alabama, Auburn, UF, UGA, Georgia Tech, UK, LSU, Ole Miss, State, Tulane, UT, and Vanderbilt

SEC 14 = add Maryland and Texas A&M
SEC 16 = add North Carolina and Virginia

In such a realignment 8 of 16 members would be AAU schools making a very academic conference indeed. In the subsequent years having 8 AAU member schools may have added a few more by now with UGA being the first in.

GT would win about as often as they lost to MSU. Tulane would have dropped out long ago.

They were like Notre Dame of the South.

Won a MNC in the WW I era with Heisman
Won a MNC in the Jazz Age with Alexander
Won a MNC post WW II with Dodds

If Dodds does not get in a hissy fit with Bear Bryant he probably continues to dominate the Dawgs.

Dodd also understood the deep-seated rivalry with the University of Georgia. His teams won 8 games in a row over the Bulldogs from 1946–1954 outscoring the Bulldogs 176–39 during the winning streak. This 8–game winning streak against Georgia remains the longest winning streak by either team in the series.

Best thing that ever happened to UGA football was Tech leaving the SEC! Dodd's would often say later it was the biggest mistake Tech ever made in leaving the SEC.


As for Tulane, never forget they were an early power and were the one who should have played the Rose Bowl that Bama got after the Tulane did not accept for for the lost school time it would have caused. We have the Sugar Bowl because of Tulane, not LSU.

By 1960 the series favored Georgia 28-26-5

Georgia can also claim titles in '20, '27, and '42.

The series would be closer but Tech has never been the big brother
