What does Saban need to accomplish going forward to be considered the GOAT?

Bear Bryant won 6 National Titles at Alabama. Saban has 3. Say he coaches for another 10 years and wins 2-3 more championships. Would you consider him the best ever?
Obviously, one has to take into account the different eras of college football.
So, who would you take if, and it's a big if, Saban was able to equal the Bear's number of titles?

Do any of you think he'll be here for 10 years? Not even a flame, he's not young.

I don't think he'll ever match BB's SECCs though. But in this day and age, NS winning 5-6 NCs might do it.

i'm only 26 and don't know too much about the bear but from all the mystique surrounding him and everything that is said he did for the game. I don't think saban could surpass him as the goat

If Saban can win 3 more championships in 10 years then I will believe he is the GOAT, but he will not reach the iconic status of the Bear, no way.

I have to agree with you, even to the extent of giving your post a .
Coaching these days is a young man's business, far more so than it was in the days of Bryant and Shug, Woody and Bo. Tenures are far shorter, salaries are far higher and the pressure is far greater.
However, I think that accomplishments should scale along those lines as well, taking into account how the times have changed.
It's all a matter of perspective.

This is what I was looking for, objective discussion.
It seems to me that Saban certainly has the drive and intensity to coach for another 10 years, but there really is no way of knowing if he is up to it.
I think Alabama winning last night might actually hurt his chances of winning multiple titles though. We appear to be on a massive shift in determining the FBS champion due to last night and playoffs appear inevitable. Instead of winning one game to win a championship, teams may need to win two, 3 if some people get their way.
However, if he can win 2-3 more titles with a playoff system in place, that would only help his case.
As an Alabama fan the Bear will always hold a special place in my fandom. But, for the first time ever, I think we may have someone that can overtake him.
Thoughts?

He's halfway there already, would only be 65 in another 5 yrs. I think he's here that long, maybe a little more if he decides he isn't ready to get out of coaching after that.

And of course, an idiot decides to show his face.

I truely believe at this point everyone in the SEC that thinks he leaves to start anew is just kidding themselves. I really have no feel how long he stays in the game but I do feel like he will at least finish out the current last years on his contract. Hell he is still recruiting at an eliet level, who would want to give these classes up to some other coach this soon ?

really not a flame, does the one with the most NC automatically becomethe goat coach, some did alot with less to work with, or is it only D1. What about a guy like Eddie Robinson with the most wins?

Saban needs 1 more title to equal Bryant. Only 3 of the titles Bama claims Bryant won are legit as far as bama being the best team in the country that year. Then I give Bryant the benefit of the doubt for 1965 though it is debateable. So, Bryant had the best team in the country 4 times at most. Saban has done it three times so far.
As for total wins, Saban will never get to 300, so you have to look at winning percentage.
You can mostly throw out the scholly limitations. Saban ignores those and his sign and cut strategy gives him a major advantage similar to Bryant. Sure other teams could do what saban does, but most do not so he has an advantage not unlike Bryant when he signed too many.

10 years or more is doubtful unless he plans to drop dead soon after retiring. I say 5 more at least, 8 at most.

If he caught Bryant, I'd say he is the best, but I certainly don't expect that.

Actually, Paterno has the most wins over Robinson, but only has 2 NC on his resume. Would you consider him the best coach of all time? I wouldn't. Longevity does not equal greatness. Hell, look at Gale Sayers as an example. He is in the NFL Hall of Fame, but do you know how many years he played Pro Football? Six.
If Saban can replicate his first 5 years as Alabama coach over the next 5 years, then he definitely belongs in the conversation as the best ever.

The only way I see Saban coaching anywhere but Bama is if he retires, then after a year or two decides the lake house is too boring and gets another rebuilding job.
