LSU fans are pretty stoked about the hiring of Lane Kiffin.

Is Lane a bigger hire than Brian Kelly was, less so, or about the same?

Honestly the Brian Kelly hire was more shocking because it was not expected. The Lane hire was confirmation that he wanted the position previously and that Nick Saban still thinks LSU is a top tier job.

No. The fanbase is more excited about the Lane hire for several reasons.

Lane is a much more exciting hire. However BK was a bigger hire. LSU pulling the Ole Miss coach is expected. LSU pulling Notre Dames all time winningest coach was unexpected.

That is revisionist history. There were a very similar amount, and type, of celebratory posts on tRant as there are now.

Not sure how LSU fans define bigger hire…

BK had more prestige and a longer playoff coaching resume leaving a big name program ND to go to LSU.

While Ole Miss has less national prestige, it is an SEC program, and Lane is more respected as a ball coach.

What does that have to do with my post?

You are much less likely to know the answer than an active LSU poster. It's not hard to understand.

Lane is a much bigger hire. Kelly was vastly overrated at ND. He beat a bunch of average teams and the majority of the time his team played a team with equal or better talent, they didn't just lose, they got their dicks kicked in. ND has won more big games than they did under Kelly and when they lose to equal or more talented teams, they don't constantly get blown out.

ND is also recruiting much better without Kelly and they've won more bigger games than Kelly did under Freeman now. From all that has come out and based on what Freeman has done on the recruiting front, it's clear that Kelly was a very lazy recruiter at ND both with HS recruiting and in the portal. If Kelly were coaching last year's ND team they wouldn't have made the Natty because a lot of the key recruits and portal players they landed under Freeman never would've committed to Kelly in the first place.

Poaching ND's coach is and always will be a bigger deal than poaching Ole Miss's coach. Kelly's hire did seem to come out of nowhere. Lane's a media circus.

I know I'll get scorched for this, but Kelly had a better resume than Lane does. It just didn't work.

Everything you say about Kelly is also true of Kiffin.

Both are fools gold.

Is Kiffin lazy? I know he's not the best HS recruiter, but he is very good with the portal. With HS recruiting, he'll at least know the names of the kids with LSU offers.

You need a certain amount of chaos to succeed at LSU. Coaches eating grass, chasing co-eds and other men’s wives, “we coming and we ain’t backing down”, all that shite. It’s just how LSU rolls. Lane brings that. Kelly was dead on arrival. Get your popcorn ready.

I was never a big fan of the Kelly hire. It felt good that we could take the Notre Dame coach, but it turned out that a lot of them wanted him gone. After the hire, I thought it might work out, but he just came here to retire.

Lane feels different, but we'll see.

He's never pulled in a top10 class counting transfers.

Take last year, Ole Miss finished #16 overall even while bringing in 53 commits. The average recruit level was all the way down at 88.

They year before they finished #17 with 48 commits.

He's not developing players, he's just collecting them every year, and they aren't highly rated. He does better in the portal likely because parents have less of a say.

And no, he's not doing good things with them either. Ole Miss played the weakest schedule in the SEC. They played 2 legit ranked teams and went .500 against them this year. Kiffin has 2 big wins in his career, one came in 2011 against Oregon while he was the HC of USC. The other was last year when he beat Georgia. Of course last year he also lost games to Kentucky, blew a game against LSU and lost to Billy Napier @ Florida.

He's not good against ranked teams, especially on the road.

He's gonna need to be a different coach than he has been in the past if he's going to come close to meeting LSU's expectations. People can learn from their mistakes, so we'll see. I'm not holding my breathe though.

Of course he was...MUCH bigger...but it seems like he started taking Ozempic and slimmed down a bit while he was at Baton Rouge.

I thought for sure you were making a crack at Auburn fans' perch at the top of the revisionist history groupthink club.
