re: Was Alabama's Success in 2008-09 Due In Part to LSU Being Down?

Are you basing your opinion of LSU football on the 90's and are waiting for us to return to that decade of mistakes under Joe Dean, the cheapest AD we've ever had?

Keep waiting. Things are different now and have been for some time.

Not if you have a team filled with Saban's talent, which we all know does not require any coaching.

You didn't make an argument solely on recruiting in that post. You made an argument about coaching, recruiting, and player development. Obviously that argument has holes in it. You're trying to make an arugment about the future because of a three point win last year. Leading you to question Alabama's success in 2008-09, overlooking the fact that they won 24 consecutive regular season games in that stretch, including becoming the SEC's only 14-0 team.
Sure, Alabama had great teams over those two years. If LSU had had better QB play, they would not have won 24 straight, quite possibly. It definitely looked like Bama was trending up and LSU down. But, when you consider the mitigating factors, the differences were not as stark as they appeared.
I am not basing it all on a 3 point win by LSU. LSU went 11-2, keeps pulling in top recruiting classes, will be a top 5 team this year, and has their QB situation worked out. It is reasonable to assume that they will either keep beating Bama or the teams will be equal to one another from now on.
Just speculating. Obviously, what happens on the field determines all of this.

Right. Because 3 years after he leaves, his recruits will just magically win a national championship under a coach who is a certifiable idiot.

Of course, that was the Bama fan argument 2007-08.

Then LSU doesn't win in 2010, if Alabama doesn't have a young defense or injuries on the offensive line.

Or Jim McElwain calling the plays. Alabama had no shot at winning the LSU game with his shitty playcalling.

Kind of like when Arkansas or Ole Miss beat LSU.
When's the last time LSU beat Arkansas?

This is exactly what we said about our OC pretty much every game for the past 3 years (even when we win) Except for this one game...

Sure thing. I guess it's just a coincidence that Bama was on serious probation and Mike Shula was Bama's coach during LSU's "glory years".

2009.
Geez. The Arkansas propaganda on this board is getting to everyone, isn't it?
Wow.

There it is.
That's the argument that I'm talking about. It's the Bama fans "go-to" argument when LSU's success is talked about.
But, it's a double-edged sword. That is the point of my post.

You had the #1 defense in the SEC and almost your whole offense returning and you had Saban's recruiting for 4 years.
You won the NC the year before and were returning your QB, heisman winning RB, and top 10 draft pick WR.
No excuses for last year. LSU was just better like Alabama will be if they win this year. LSU shouldn't have any excuses this year either.

Yeah you're claiming 08 and 09 were good years for Bama because LSU was "down". Even though they had no reason to be "down". Yet you completely discard Bama's situation when LSU was successful. Later.

LOL, I guess LSU fans are only allowed to play the if game or make excuses. Your thread though, so go ahead.

I see. LSU gets excuses, but Alabama doesn't. I guess LSU wasn't defending national champions in 2008.

Yeah LSU didn't just kick the star QB off the team or anything.

No, I'm not discarding the excuses. I accept them. I just don't think that they are the whole story.
I am using Bama Fan logic here and wondering why it doesn't apply. But, you are trying to have it both ways, it seems.
And, regarding 2008-09, I said, "Due in part to LSU being down." Obviously, Bama had lots of success apart from LSU. Speaking specifically of the LSU-Bama games.

I said that LSU was down and had major problems, especially related to coaching and Ryan Perrilloux being dismissed.
Alabama was the preseason #1 last year and are this year too. What were the excuses again? Except for poor play?
Did you lose your starting QB?
Your defensive coordinator (Saban)?
Your OC?
Skill players?
Didn't you have the #1 defense in the SEC, even though they were young?
I'm actually not trying to slam Alabama. I just don't see what your excuses were.
Kind of like us in 2004. We should have been much better, except that we had a terrible QB situation. But, no excuses.

i think an aberration would be if every team in the sec was "up" in one given year.
the sec is always incredibly tough. even the so called cupcakes can take a big boy out on any given saturday--the rivalries are that intense.
but, if all of the traditionally top teams were playing every weekend at the top of their game, with their best players & best coach ever, it would be even more of a blood bath than normal. and, the sec would then have to be officially moved into the nfl..
