re: Was Alabama's Success in 2008-09 Due In Part to LSU Being Down?

So, you're actually trying to say that LSU being down, and Alabama capitalizing in 2008-09, is more telling, than LSU finally overcoming Alabama complete ownership for decades, in 2000?

LSU returned to form last year and beat Alabama, the preseason #1 and defending national champion returning almost all their offense and still finishing with the #1 defense in the SEC.
Also, LSU had somethink like the #82 offense in the country and still went 11-2 and beat Alabama.
Sheesh, LSU fans always comparing to big bro

Irrelevant, being that things have changed now. I honestly like LSU's chance of success going forward better than I like Alabama's, being that LSU is the only school in a talent-rich state.

And 6 of those wins for LSU came in the last 8 meetings? Wow, speaking of capitalizing when a foe is down

I know no Bama fans will admit it, but the SEC West was way, way down those two years compared to now and they had a rather easy path.
Hell, the West wasn't exactly on fire in 2003 and 2007, if you're going in that direction.

Was LSU not "the only school in a talent-rich state" in 2008-09?

No, I'm talking about the relative strength of the overall programs right now. In 2011-2012.
It will be obvious that LSU is the stronger program, not just when Alabama is on sanctions and has Shula as a coach and has a ton of other excuses, but overall.
Alabama's only wins over LSU in the past 8 years are when we had a bunch of excuses too. And, the games were very close and Bama had their best teams.
Take away the excuses and LSU starts winning again. If LSU wins this year, it will be very telling as to who the strongest overall program is - not just the strongest team that year.

This is stupid. Neither LSU or Alabama became dominant because the other school was down. If you want to point out a SEC school taking advantage of another school's misfortune, look no further than what Georgia did from 2002-2004 when Florida had Ron Zook as their HC or even Tennessee during the '90s when basically the entire SEC was down except for Florida and maybe Alabama for a couple years.

Yes, good programs do that.
We also won last year too. That was one of those 6 wins. Alabama was pretty strong last year. Or, they were supposed to be. Don't know what the excuse was.

You're sounding like a barner with these select time periods to make an argument.

Whatever makes you feel better. I guess we'll have to wait until Alabama beats LSU in November.

I'm guessing the point the OP is making is that the series a lot closer now. LSU is a much better program nowadays. LSU took advantage during Bama's down time and Bama took advantage during LSU's downtime. Now that both programs are starting to get back to full strength, what will happen? Interesting offseason discussion..
Although I do not consider the LSU program to be fully back on track until LSU is capable of fielding an SEC caliber offense. Which will hopefully be this season.

But, this is how Alabama fans explained LSU's success from 2001-2007 and said that Saban would return Alabama to complete dominance.
I'm just saying that Bama's success over the past few years also corresponded to LSU's decline for pretty specific reasons. When that reversed, LSU beat Alabama again.
Did you disagree with Bama fans when they were saying this?

It was still better than the 08-09 stretch. LSU's permanent east opponent was also light years better than Bama's during each time frame as well.

You are trying way to hard with this angle. Ala sucked in those years and didn't give a shite what happened to anyone else.

If that happens, the answer to my question will clearly be NO. The two programs will be even.
If LSU beats Bama in November in Tuscaloosa, then you have to consider that I am right and that LSU's program has a leg up on Alabama overall, including coaching, recruiting, talent development, etc.
Yeah, this is a pretty big game, I would think. Bama will have a lot of pressure on them if both teams are successful prior to the game and come undefeated or with just one loss.

So a two year win streak indicates who has the stronger program

And what will your argument be if Alabama goes 13-1, with the only loss to LSU?

No, not during that time period. You are right. But, after Saban got there, this is how Bama defined those years for both Auburn and LSU.
Just saying that you can make a counter argument about 2008-09, especially in light of what happened last year.
IF LSU wins this year, it will further prove what I am suggesting.
