Vanderbilt vs. Stanford

Not criticizing Vandy, just wondering what keeps them from capitalizing on Stanfords model of success. Recruiting highly intelligent athletes who also have a lot of talent. Stanford makes a living on fast, smart, and disciplined white boys to put a decent team together every year. California does it in the fertile California recruiting territory, why can't Vandy do the same in the even more talent rich southeast. Hard to believe there's not a bunch of really smart disciplined kids who would buy into that model, and would love to spend their college years playing football in Nashville while also getting a top notch education. Notre Dame does the same in the Mid-West to a lesser extent.

1.) California vs Tennessee recruiting talent
2.) Endowment ($$$)...21.4 billion vs 4.0 billion
There are 17 private FBS schools...but only a handful are elite in football. Only USC and Notre Dame have been (relatively) consistently good. Remember that Stanford isn't too far removed from a 1-11 season. (note that Miami was very good for quite a while, too...but they have dropped back to mediocrity).
FBS Private Schools: Baylor, Boston College, BYU, Duke, Miami, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Rice, SMU, Stanford, Syracuse, TCU, Tulane, Tulsa, USC, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest.
Sure, you will have a flash in the pan with a TCU or Baylor...but it seems that these schools can't sustain success like USC and Notre Dame.
Vanderbilt is much more like the average 15, than like the elite 2.

So much of it is who is the "hot program" right now. Remember that before Harbaugh got to Stanford they were terrible. They were 40 point underdogs to USC that one game. Winning that really changed the way people looked at the program. They also had a very smooth coaching transition when Harbaugh left keeping Shaw. Vandy was doing great, but lost almost their entire recruiting class when Franklin left and they were so barren at the QB position it made it really hard for them to compete.
Remember just 2 years ago Vandy was 8-5, with QB injuries that hurt them in a couple games.

1. Stanford is better than Vandy in every way. It's a true destination school that is recognized internationally as a top 5 on earth degree. Plus, you get to live in the Bay area on a ridiculously nice campus. If you have ever visited Stanford, you will understand.
2. Stanford plays in the Pac 12 where you can actually build a program without being crushed. There are only 3-5 good teams in the Pac 12 every year v. the 9-10 we have every year in the SEC.
3. Stanford has tons of money and insanely wealthy alumni who have invested into the football facilities, including a brand new stadium. Vandy's stadium is a dump they can't fill.

Stanford's overall athletic program is one of the best in the country as well.

Tcu is definitely not a flash in the pan, 142-46 in the last 10 years, 8-3 Bowl record since GP took over, how is that a flash in the pan? Baylor is also 47-13 in the last 5 years, that aint no flash in the pan, flash in the pan is inconsistency those are two consistent programs that have found coaches that can properly utilize the talent around them.

Those are coaches, not programs.
Also academically TCU and Baylor are not in the same conversation as Vanderbilt if Stanford. You'd have to compare them to Rice.

Three reasons-
1. West coast vs. Southeast
2. Chubby white gals and Yankees vs hot Asians
3. SEC vs PAC10

Competition level. Stanford is in a PAC with basically one top team right now. The SEC has what, five plus?

I assume we're talking about football because Vanderbilt is having tremendous success in baseball and basketball.
-Stanford had one of the top 5 coaches in NCAA (Harbaugh) and is really banking off of his success. It'll be interesting to see if Shaw can keep it up with UCLA and USC rising back to prominence.
-Stanford gets to recruit California, the most populated state.
-Vanderbilt gets to recruit Tennessee, which historically doesn't pump out that many good recruits.

Better School, Better area, better football team.

The Farm is actually really cool to visit. But yeah, there is absolutely no comparison.

The only thing Vanderbilt has over Stanford is its easier to get football players accepted. Better comparison might be Vanderbilt vs Northwestern.

Years upon years without a true sec caliber athletic director... I'm expecting to get sued by a vandy law professor for this statement.

Stanford doesn't have a glut of fan support for football - they are not a school that values football success like a SEC team would. Obviously the competition level in the Pac-12 is in Stanford's favor as well (although that gap isn't as dramatic as some would believe).
The biggest difference is coaching, as is the case for every college football program.
Harbaugh and Shaw are great/proven coaches. Mason is in over his head @ Vandy.

We are trying the Stanford model right now. He's 3-9 overall and 0-8 in the SEC.
