USC promoting Ray Tanner had the exact opposite effect I thought it would

From the perspective of the baseball program specifically, I thought it would be greatly beneficial to them. I assumed the baseball program would be his baby and they'd get substantially more preferential treatment than other programs around the country would from their ADs. I assume most fans felt the same way?
What the hell went wrong? Was the assumption just wrong or did he possibly meddle a little too much and it ended up backfiring? A transitional period didn't surprise me, but seeing the struggles become so prolonged has me baffled. I really like South Carolina's program so this sucks to see.

Not all successful coaches are great politicians. Athletic Administration is an entirely different field.

By no means did Ray ever exhibit the knowledge or business savvy required to be an SEC level athletics director. Many of us knew he was in over his head from the get go, and that it was a mistake for the university to give him the job.
Ray’s tenure should be a lesson to every school that good coaches don’t make good administrators, especially in today’s climate. Of course, I think this is something most universities already knew, but SC loves doing things the wrong way.

Tanner totally screwed the baseball program, and at times football. No doubt about that.
The non major sports are actually in a really good spot. Ill give Ray credit for that. I am also happy the dude is retiring so we can stop blaming him and let him be what he should be, a local legend that we love.

Tenner thought the same when they made Fat Phil their AD. That went well.

Outstanding baseball coach. Horrible AD. It is what it is at this point.
