People are always in control. The choice to take a med or accept is theirs. Schizophrenia doesn't scare me as much as Aspbergers. Aspbergers is not considered a condition it is considered a development or social disorder. Matter of fact you are not allowed to diagnose Aspbergers anymore it goes under a spectrum of Autism.

Good. Lithium is the most common but blood levels have to be closely monitored.

Sometimes it's trial and error until they find the right mix for the patient. Then, like Porky said, they have to be continually monitored. Forever. It can work for a while, then the chemistry changes and they'll start cycling again. And sadly, people with bipolar disorder often pass it on to kids - it's definitely genetic. In my case, there were others in his family that had it as well. Passed from one generation to the next. That's why marriage to someone with that condition is tricky.

Tell me who is in control of choices?

The affected person is in control of their choices, but their decision making process is altered by their illness leading to poor and irrational behavior. Especially in those not yet diagnosed.

False.

People are not born with a slip that states their mental illness and required prescription.

Yup, like your ex, on some days she puts on a front like everything is fine and doesn't need or want anyones help.. If i didn't love her Id say screw it and forget about her. But she's at the point right now where she can save herself if she commits to her meds and has a good support group around her, and Im one of the few reliable people in her life so in just trying to help. Sometimes I just wish i could be bipolar instead of her bc i feel like i would be able to handle it, although that's easy for me to say.

Yes. With a true psychiatric illness, the person can do things that they would never do otherwise. Unfortunately, too many have used this as a cop out for their bad behavior.

DING DING DING!!!!!!! And for the people around them, it's hard to tell when it's the condition, and when it's just bad behavior.

Shame keeps people from seeking medical help with their mental health problems.

Attitudes like sms and other whackos only contribute to that taboo.

Its often a health issue, just like any other disease.

You are always in control. The degree of control you exhibit is what is based of the nuerons and synapses. Can you tell me why most mental health issues are not natural?

False. You are assuming every one has the proper medication and chooses to stop taking it.

Not everyone is lucky enough to find the proper cocktail of ingredients that gets their condition under control.

Your argument is baseless, so no, I won't waste my time with it.

You're either a scientologist or a fundy. Either way, I don't have time for it.

Trust me. I am waaaaaayyy more qualified to answer this than you are. No insult, but I have dealt with it personally and have advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of such illnesses. Once you see it in a loved one, you'll change your viewpoint. It really is hard to accept someone can be "out of control" otherwise.

I worked in psychiatric hospitals for many years. I have had to intervene with straight jackets, 6-8 point posey restraints, ambulatory restraints, and chemical restraints hundreds of times with patients out of control.

I'm going to save you a world of hurt down the road. Get as far away as you can from her. Chances are her credit is already ruined as she has no impulse cintrol and will ruin yours too. They will become very sexually impulsive as well and will be very very unfaithful to you. It will come to a point where if she is on meds she will not want to take them anymore because of side effects so they will self medicate with pot which only exacerbates her symptoms. She will disappear for days on end, then weeks when she is in her manic stage. She can't help her condition but you can sure as hell help not getting further invovled with her. I worked in behavioral health for a while and this is how it ALWAYS turns out. I have seen bipolar doctors and lawyers chased down by local sheriffs departments to serve court commitments as thet is the only wa to temporarilly reel them in.
