He's 18 and teens tend to think in absolutes. When things are great they'll always be great and when things turn bad, it will have the worst consequences. Fortunately, when we mature we realize things aren't as bad as they seem or as good as they appear....
Time for him to talk with professionals and get some counseling for whatever is going on in his life. Fortunately he's in a place where he can get that.

I know it's absolutely none of my business, but this whole deal really seems strange. I'd like to know what got into him.

That is always one of my main worries when I hear about something like this. Take a Farm to Market road etc. and runoff the road, it can be days before someone finds the car.

I read cryptic messages on twitter that this isn't the first time he's done this. The way the school and the people reacted makes me think there is something about it that wasn't entirely surprising. Who knows though.

Glad he's okay, and hope whatever issues he's carrying around are resolved....
Yes, I agree what another post alluded to earlier...There are a lot of empty roads to travel in central TX...so glad he's okay.
