So, the hiring of Oats pushed it over the top ? When you hire a new hot coach you make promises, when you hire a FOTM Members, you dictate what he gets. That has always been my argument for hiring those types for a program.
I think Byrne hiring his own coach and getting a firm grip on things pushed it over the top. This has been his baby from Day 1 - fixing the basketball arena situation. I think last year's success and the general positive vibe of the program problem helped move it the last mile.
But as Byrne and everyone else knows, even if Oats somehow ends up crashing and burning a beautiful arena with a good atmosphere completely changes your marketability to coaches moving forward.

FYI, the info is that Byrne got the go ahead by donors last year that they'll put the money up for a new arena.
So it's happening.
So it's happening.

Yep - the semi-recent visits to DePaul, UVA, James Madison and Ole Miss' arenas on scout trips weren't exactly state secrets

They've demo'ed parts of it already. But the main historic building is being renovated and will become the welcome center for the new Performing Arts Academic Center.
This is what it's suppose to look like after renovations and additions.
See you guys following Auburn. Surprised they are not building a larger performance center. Auburn built theirs a couple of years ago and it holds 1,202. Well I guess they can sell it out to keep Nate happy.

The facility will include four performance theatres—a black box theatre with flexible seating for 175-275, a 350-seat proscenium style theatre, a 450-seat venue specifically designed for dance and a dance studio theatre with flexible space for rehearsals, recitals and smaller performances. These performance spaces will set the stage for an intimate artist-to-audience connection, elevating the experience for each patron.

I do think Oats blew a lot of momentum by losing in the Sweet 16. Bruce would have gotten anything he wanted after the Final 4, but the NCAA stuff slowed that down. Gus got the FOF off the drawing table, but was slow balled at the end. Schools like to build things to keep a coach or draw the attention a future coach.

Far from consistent now. At least at Rupp.

The time of this is pretty funny.
Get beat by your arch rival in their world class arena, and the next day go out and decide to copy said arena. Don't get me wrong, I wish Georgia would follow the same blueprint as well. But its amazing what your program slipping in comparison to your arch rival will do to suddenly shake the money tree.

A little dark? Hell, Helen Keller must have designed the lighting. When the Apostle Paul described the Utter Darkness of Hell, he was talking about Coleman.
Edit. Maybe it was Jude.

I think smaller arenas are the way to go. You can generate the noise and exxitmement with fans being on top of the action. I’m glad Auburn did it.

This board meeting has been noted for months as the one that will kick off the Arena process. They just release the agenda 24 hours before and that happened to be the day after the basketball game.

With the size of Tuscaloosa and proximity to B'Ham, I guess it will seat around 11k.
Auburn's 9k arena is about right for the population.
Both schools could sell out a much larger arena on weekends and big games but not the average mid-week game.

The general analysis of actual arse in seat attendance when the program isn't in shambles is:
- Mid-week buy game (Nov/Dec) - 8,000 - 9,000
- Weekend buy game (Nov/Dec) - 9,000 - 11,000
- Mid-week SEC game (bad team/Wed early) - 10,000 - 11,000
- Mid-week SEC game (good team/good time) - 10,500 - full
- Weekend SEC game (bad team) - 10,500 - full
- Weekend SEC game (good team) - Full
So, the best option seems to be somewhere around 10,500-11,000. Like you said, because of the population centers/distance weekend games and mid-week games are almost entirely different populations of people. It's just really hard for folks from Atlanta/Montgomery/Wiregrass to get to Auburn for a 6 PM Wed night tip - same with folks from Birmingham/Huntsville/Mobile to Tuscaloosa. Saturdays are wide open for them.
So we want something that will still feel full (80-90%) and be affordable for a Tuesday night game against Troy in November, but also be always sold out and a tough ticket for basically any big game or conference game.

Fine by me but I want no part of a basketball arena on Bryce property.
I used to walk by Bryce all the time. Guys were always playing basketball there. Sometimes with a basketball.

Our medical school expanded to Birmingham. We'll be fine going forward.

The problem with Auburn in the past was the product put on the court. Montogomery is 45 mins away and Atlanta is 1.5 hours away. The Auburn-Opelika area is Top 10 in the State. It shouldn't be a problem to fill a 10K arena for either program if you make it worth the trip.
