That is why it would make more sense to tear down Coleman and play in Birmingham for two seasons. It might even help attendance with the newly modeled BJCC.

So the Eddins House, the oldest building in the state isn’t historical?
I reckon it is historical but it is just a society-level hoarders addiction to keep non-permanent structures up due to sentimental attachment. Document it and hope we don't have another Dark Ages or Library of Alexandria moment w/ technology.

The last update I got was they are going to keep Coleman for multiple reasons:
(a) University functions and other large events that they generally have there
(b) The basketball practice facility is new and very nice and is attached to it
(c) It's proximity to everything means it remains a good place to have administration offices (which they have a lot of there now)

I find this interesting because UA was more than happy to use the COVID pandemic as a pretense to end a long-running relations with Tuscaloosa City and Tuscaloosa County school systems w/r/t hosting high school graduations.
I guess there are enough university-level events to keep it booked.

The Coleman site is ideal but that would be an absolute bitch to deal with unless they want to play at Foster, which would never happen

Same arguments we hear for keeping BEC up now. They finally decide that they are going to tear it down and make a green space with the land. Those buildings become a huge eyesore and putting lipstick on it doesn't age well. Haley Center is the next on the target list.

It is always about kicking the can down the road for the full cost of the move. Demo-ing Coleman and building a new arena is a massive expense. This looks cheaper on the bottom line because the full cost won't be addressed until they absolutely need the space taken by Coleman for some new mission critical academic or athletic capital improvement project.

Little brother feeling pressure from Auburn

They should demo that old main building and put something with utility there.
This is what it's suppose to look like after renovations and additions.

I will take "being held hostage by the Taliban with demand to build new basketball arena" as the reason at this point.

Doesn’t cost that much to demo a building

Yea, wouldn't shock me if they eventually do that. My guess is if the practice facility wasn't attached (a pretty stupid decision in hindsight, but leadership in the AD at that point was pretty abysmal) they would get rid of it.
But because it is, they'll probably wait 5-10 years until it's time to replace that and wreck it.

I can't understand why they don't build the new center in the Coleman parking lot and completely demo Coleman. Parking could be made where the old Coleman stood.

Yeah. Alabama's campus nearly doubled with the Bryce purchase 10 years ago.
The blank space is the Bryce property.
The new arena near the new Performing Arts center next to the River would be a great place.
The Performing Arts Center will also have a welcome center and will be a showpiece for the university when completed.

So is this about Nate Oates complaining about Auburns small arena and the ability to sell it out?
The original plan called for a renovation of the 54-year-old Coleman Coliseum but that idea evolved over time. Moving fans closer to the floor has long been an objective in improving the current Coleman Coliseum layout that seats 14,474.
Alabama athletics director in 2018 estimated a capacity in the 9,500- to 10,000-seat range but those were just preliminary figures.

People do not realize that this is not just an Athletic Dept issue and the Administration will always side with the AD. When land is limited, other Schools within the University have plans for expansion. That is why I asked about the Medical School.

Byrne has wanted to build a new arena since he got here. Fans/donors have wanted to build a new arena since the first big facelift to Coleman back in 2005, and only grown in impatience.
I think most were ok with the renovation, just not thinking we'd ever get a new one. But at some point the price point for new compared to renovation became close enough, along with hiring of Oats, that Byrne convinced donors that the right move was just to build brand new.
Capacity is going to be 10,500-11,000, last I heard.

As summerofgeorge pointed out, some people don't realize that a large portion of the athletic dept offices are housed in Coleman.
The office space, lounge areas, meeting rooms and practice facilities and other ancillary spaces in Coleman are new and first class nice.
Yeah the arena itself is a little dark and seating is steep...but Coleman is much much more than a basketball arena.
Coleman is basically an entire office building and practice facilities that happens to have an arena attached.

So, the hiring of Oats pushed it over the top ? When you hire a new hot coach you make promises, when you hire a FOTM Members, you dictate what he gets. That has always been my argument for hiring those types for a program.
